    Help/Advise Stud wall

Thanks. The original wall is 750mm (including plaster) so I think I could dot-n-dab over the join on both sides after scoring the existing plaster and then secure as normal to the studs - this should strengthen the join sufficiently. Getting the first stud attached; I was thinking about...

one hole for sky + coaxial.

Thanks, that was my next question. I was simply going to fill the hole with silicone - that seems to be what is used normally? Those plates look like they could channel more water down the back after time? Is it OK to just plug the old holes with mortar?

one hole for sky + coaxial.

I'm considering shifting where the sky cable comes in so that I don't have to run it along a wall in sight. I was going to run the coaxial TV cable with it at the same time and just have them coming in the same hole, is it OK to do this or is it better to drill a hole for each?

    Help/Advise Stud wall

I knocked out the doorway and surrounding wall in a cupboard that is being converted into a shower room. I was planning on butting a stud wall up against the remaining wall to close off the room. However, what I thought would be a single skin brick wall wasn't. It was this really thin...

    Extend internal bricck wall.

Well, shower room, not bathroom. I've had a fitter look at it who is going to do the actual work but was going to prepare the space myself to save some money - how do you tie a stud wall in to the brick work, would it not be wider than the original wall?

    Extend internal bricck wall.

I've got a cupboard in the upstairs hall that I'd like to turn into a small bathroom. I'm planning on knocking away the wall (more just a door surround) with the door and then extend the remaining wall to run across the hall and incorporate a door frame. What's the best way to do this... I...

Building alcove unit and plaster is not true/flush/level.

OK, thanks for the advice all. A crash course in scribing it is then.

Building alcove unit and plaster is not true/flush/level.

I understand you (after a couple of reads) - That's a great way to get the curve in the shelves and a technique I will hang onto as I KNOW it will come in handy in this wonky old house. However, I was going to stud out the units (three shelf unit on the bottom and cabinet at the top up to the...

Building alcove unit and plaster is not true/flush/level.

I was going to keep the shelves and unit top as natural wood but the rest will be painted - what do you mean pack the gaps? Just plaster them until level? I guess a coat of pva and some ready mix plaster followed by a sand wouldn't be beyond me.

Building alcove unit and plaster is not true/flush/level.

I'm wanting to build in a floor unit with some shelves above in the alcoves either side of my chimney stack. The problem is that the middle of the back wall in the alcoves is about 8mm deeper than the corners. I guess this is due to the corners holding more plaster than the centre. I don't...

    Removing floor tiles, possibly asbestos?

The floor is pretty uneven, was going to screed then install underfloor heating and laminate. Got heat gun, its going to be a C*#T but I think about a day to remove the lot. Got a p3 face mask but they are not breaking up much now that I'm using the gun. However, should I be continuing to...

Opening chimney, requires strong boy, lintel etc. (I think?)

So I want to install a wood burner. Had a minging 70's style giant brick brick monstrosity thing in there originally so I took that out. However, now I'm left with some crappy brick work and no obvious lintel - so much for finding a nice arch... So. I'm now thinking this is beyond my limited...

    Removing floor tiles, possibly asbestos?

Lifted off the lino and found not one but two layers of tiles under it - urgh. The first tiles (mock red brick effect) seem to break off no bother. But the grey ones underneath are stuck down with some black gunk that sometimes lifts off with the tile but mostly requires scraping. I had...

    Is my boiler hooked up??

Next stupid question... Can I connect a gas hob from these pipes too or does that need one of it's own?

    Is my boiler hooked up??

Hmm... OK. Thanks for that, I'll go back tomorrow and follow the pipe work back to (hopefully) find the meter. The pipe work looks a bit mental to me, I'm guessing they didn't want to rip up the concrete floor to run the pipes so they have boxed them off close to the ceiling.
