    oil removal

Easy solution. Just pour neat washing up detergent on stains. Soaks in and gradually lifts up oil. Eventually concrete goes quite white in colour. Can take a week to completely remove with more detergent added as required.

    heating

You said earlier no problem on hot water side and that you have checked thermostats. Fault as I suggested earlier looks likely to be CH valve not operating properly or duff contacts. I really wonder if thermostats are operating properly. Easy to check wiring for operation with neon screwdriver...

    Is Artex flexible ?

That awful artex has been used for ages covering up cracked ceilings. So yes it is flexible. Modern gypsum plasters are totally rigid so crack easy but are very quick to put up as they go off in a few minutes. Where walls move particularly wood framed I prefer a lime plater with horsehair...

    central heating controller

There is a possibilty power supply to controller is stopped by faulty connection. Need to take cover off and check with neon screwdriver choc block is OK. Need a wiring diagram probably inside lid to check if thermostats are working.

    Downlighting hassles

Intermittent contact can be caused by corrosion on bulb contacts or holder by moisture from cooking. Alternatively wiring is not firmly screwed into choc blocks above lamp in ceiling. If your downlighters are not 240V there may be poor wiring contacts in choc block at isolating transformer.

    Earthing

No unless there was a fault. Hope you have an earth leakage circuit breaker in consumer unit preferably about 30mA to protect you from fatal shocks on faults. You should connect/bond hot water side to cold water side and earth this if usual metal pipes. I usually use 16mm throughout (although...

    loop in system light switch

Before you start wiring draw it out how your cables will go. I prefer to only carry live and earth down to switch and return with the switched lives. In ceiling I use 4 terminal junction boxes with live, neutral, earh and switched lives. With two way switches. One switch has common going to...

    new extension condensation

Wonder if condensation is due to cold water pipe coming in and cooling down air to lose excess moisture. Are you generating lots of humidity in room with no ventilation? Or are the walls single brick so colder than rest of house? Need to ventilate cabinets. If you have a fan recommend paying...

    Pumped Shower

Neither will be at mains pressure. Actual pressure is cold tank to pump inlet. I would email manufacturers but personally I would use 22mm on both sides. You could consider the new plastic piping as can take the heat and all push-fit. Costs much more than copper but easier to run round.

    MCB problems

MCBs are usually much the same. Normally only a few pounds to replace. Look at QVS on the net. You are talking about a mains circuit breaker and not an earth leakage circuit breaker? Either way you need a qualified electrician to logically work out the problem. Diagnosis of most faults should...

    Flush wall boxes

I always drill outline first to required depth. Chisels out easy.

    Pumped Shower

Cannot see you will have problem with air if cold tank higher than pipework. Water under pressure throughout. However whatabout pressure drop in pipes especially hot side. Have you calculated pipe size required?

    Electric oven

Not really safe. If you are daisy chaining equipment you should use the same cable throughout unless separately fused. Therefore I would use 6mm throughout unless you are going to have a switched fuse outlet for oven. Earth oven and hob exposed metalwork to earth for your protection in case of...

    Cats on roof

How do they get onto your roof? Cats are very sensitive to smells and I find a very dilute solution of jeyes fluid or creosote will hide original smells and put them off. However will need renewing after a few weeks. More permanent solution is to remove gravel and paint surface with...

    shower unit

Yes. 9.5KW is about 39.5A at 240V mains so you could use 40A or higher MCB. Use 10mm cable as 6mm only does 32A and 10mm rated up to 43A. Might consider adding fused outlet next to shower pull switch so on switching shower it also switches shower light on.

    heating

I assume you have a fully pumped system. HW valve OK but not CH valve. Look at them when they operate on switching on heat. Could be CH valve is not operating or it is faulty. Other possibilities include blocked pipes due to crud caused by lack of inhibitor in water.

    Installing Floor Tiles

Is it a good idea? Won't the tiles be slippery in the rain. I would stick to nice small paving stones with sanded surface. Go for the ones with vertical edges to minimise joints.

    cooker

Preferable to run cooker circuit back to consumer unit. Are you sure oven will take less than 13A. If so you could wire to a plug. But much better is to have switched fused outlet with neon indicator with cable wired in permanently. Outlet could be seperated from switch with intermediate cable...

    garage

Need another consumer unit. Say £60 including RCB and 4 MCB. Single phase armoured cable say 6mm in case you would need 30A costs £70/50m. Then you have lights switches, sockets, etc. Main cost is labour to run cable to garage under ground and time taken to wire up lights and outlets. £400...

    floor leveling before tiling

Interesting problem that we had but with wooden floorboards. Went to Google search engine. Can see examples of levelling compounds that do up to 120mm. Of course the constituents change from latex based to cement based. When 'professionals' did our kitchen they did not level. Just screwed 9in...
