    Install downlights in existing ceiling

Due to have kitchen ceiling replastered and wanted to swap from central single light fitting to half a dozen downlighters. I had thought the plasterboard would need to come down giving ample access to the joists and wiring etc but the plasterer has had a look and the plasterboard is sound...

Misty new windows in the sunshine

Had an update from the window company : http://www.pilkington.com/europe/uk+and+ireland/english/building+products/forhouseholders/frequently+asked+questions/windows+technical.htm#faq2 Apparently due to the K coating. Anyone else ever had this so noticable it's aggravating? To be fair...

Misty new windows in the sunshine

It's all of them - well all that have the sun streaming in anyway. Funny thing was the fixed units had an issue in manufacturing and were replaced, so effectively were made at a different time to the opening units - yet side by side the exhibit the same appearance.

Misty new windows in the sunshine

I know there are lots of threads about misted double glazed units, where the unit has failed or the silica gel has gone etc but this is a different sort of thing. We have had the windows 3 weeks. All seems OK, and in the shade or when the sun is not out the windows look perfectly clear...

Cracks under windows on internal walls

Thanks guys - reassuring! I did wonder if it were board seams but it'd have to be very lucky (or unlucky) to get a seam at the corner of each window wouldn't it? Although the windows are about 120cm wide I think so maybe they do fall in line.

Cracks under windows on internal walls

I have noticed some hairline cracks running down the internal wall under the windows - they run vertically down almost perfectly vertically in fact from the corner of the window opening - in one downsatirs room with 2 windows there is a crack at each corner, some running down the wall to the...

    Replacement Soffit / Eaves Ventilation

We are looking to replace our fascia / soffits / guttering and have had a local firm in that seem OK - not too much sales patter etc! Our current soffits have vents running the whole length. The guy that came round said they wouldn't put vents back up, and instead he showed me this piece of...

    Wet bricks below DPC

How about sealing the bricks - when dry of course (if we ever get a dry spell long enough) - worth it?

    Wet bricks below DPC

Thanks for the quick reply If I cut a drainage strip where should I direct it to - the whole front of the house is surrounded by the drive - or is it good enough just to let the water run through into the ground underneath?

    Wet bricks below DPC

Along the front of my house I've noticed a stretch of bricks getting pretty wet under the DPC. This really started when we had scaffold up for 3 months (Nov to Feb) and with all the rain / snow/ wind there was a point where water was running off the scaffold board down the wall and pooling...

    Plaster popping over screw heads

Yep floor joists etc all done as per structural calcs -I saw them going in and they were substantial, same with the steels. Timer prob was damp - the work was going on throughout firstly the wettest, and then the coldest weather we've had for years. So if it's this, when it's dried out it...

    Plaster popping over screw heads

Our loft conversion has been plastered about 4 / 5 weeks now and so I am painting it all. Before the mist coat I noticed a handful of popped screw heads here and there and so dug out the plaster, filled with polyfilla and got on - I assumed this was normal to get a few go. Over the last...

Dark spots on new door linings

It's not limited to the knot areas though - the wood is still all bare. I have bought the knotting solution/ The dark spots / patches are on the bare wood itself? Thanks.

Dark spots on new door linings

Had some new door linings fitted and have noticed some dark patches / spots in places. Have sanded which lessens it but some seem to be through the wood to a depth. Does this sound like some sort of mould / rot, or more like resin issues ? Even if it's not will I have issues with painting etc...

    Fitting Hardiebacker round shower tray

It doesn't have upstands but a fairly wide border. Problem sort of resolved itself as we found tray that was supposed to be cemented in (manufacturers instructions) was not actually bonded to anything - so the tray can be pushed right back, and then only one side needs padding out. Tray to...

    Fitting Hardiebacker round shower tray

Having a new en-suite built in the loft - today the builders have put up the hardiebacker board round the tray but there are gaps of up to 15mm between the board and the tray - far too much to even tile and bridge as far as I can see. To my mind the hardiebacker should be tight against the...

    More loft conversion questions

Loft conversion nearing an end now - got a couple of questions that will help me decide if I need to pull the builder up on some points : 1. Wiring - in the eaves we have a little storage space - there are some electrical cables running in here that are not clipped down - should I insist this...

Upgrading Existing Doors because of Loft Conversion

No problem just a born worrier so trying to double check / second guess myself on everything. It makes sense to me but without stumbling across a definitive answer on the web (FD20 almost seems a deprecated standard?) I thought I'd check. Thanks for that - so in essence they shoould be OK - I...

Upgrading Existing Doors because of Loft Conversion

Our loft conversion is coming on and so the attention has turned to replacing the egg box doors we have currently. For the 2 new rooms in the loft the builder is installing FD30 rated doors (44mm, intumescent strips etc). For the doors on the middle and lower floor though he has given me a...
