I've just dug down and the existing retaining wall is sitting on 2in concrete and appears to be clay only 10in down. Because of the clay, is it really neccessary for me to dig 1metre down or can i start foundations shallower?

Thanks for advice r896neo. I decided not to use linear drains. Flags nearest house are falling slightly away from house as you say (although not as steep an angle as other flags coming towards house) and leaning slightly towards drain in far corner. This creates a slight u-bend when meeting up...

Thanks 'big-all' but i was refering to the gap between top of back edge of belfast sink and underside of granite worktop. I think the 12mm you refer to is for the overhang of the worktop past the inner edge of the belfast sink?
