boiler temperature went sky high bleeding rads

Sorry I wasn't clear. This is a gravity fed system with a header tank and it's got water in. There's an expansion pipe which drains in to the header tank and this wasn't hot at the tank. There's some sediment in the tank however so I wondered if this might have caused the problem. I had a...

boiler temperature went sky high bleeding rads

I went round bleeding all the radiators with the CH on. Two tall rads were a really slow to bleed so I turned the pump speed up. Probably a bad idea. When I got to the bathroom it got quite noisy and I looked at the boiler and it was indicating 99 degrees. It's a Worcester Greenstar HE, about 15...

Hanging radiator on lath and plaster wall

Genius. I’ve now found the studs using my own Special Tool (a length of 2.5 mm cable) and have cut out a small section of plaster to expose them. None are quite in the right place. I’m torn between cutting a couple of horizontal channels and fitting battens across, or removing a few short...

Hanging radiator on lath and plaster wall

I have a small 60x60 cm radiator on my kitchen wall. This is an outside wall, at least 150 years old with 2 layers of brick and a lath and plaster inner liner. I hung the radiator using spring out plasterboard fastenings, but a visitor has accidentally fallen and partially dislodged it, damaging...

    lath and plaster history

Many thanks. I’m actually trying to work out the age of my place. The wall from the 1860’s may have been done like that then. Another end wall also has it so I’m thinking this will be older. This is in somewhat worse condition and has already had some rooms redone with plasterboard by a previous...

    lath and plaster history

Not a DIY question as such, can anybody tell me if it's usual to have lath and plaster covering the inside surface of an external wall? My terraced house in Scarborough has parts which may be 250 years old. In 1860 they pulled down an end wall and rebuilt this with two layers of brick and a...

    Central heating thermostat

Regrettably they picture this model but haven't got any to sell.

    Central heating thermostat

Yes, batteries changed. The display started to scramble then it wouldn't switch on/off. I've temporarily fitted a Drayton mechanical thermostat with a dial. It's wildly inconsistent. I was happy with the original so hoping somebody makes an equivalent.

    Central heating thermostat

My Sunvic TLX7501 digital thermostat has just packed in and it appears to be no longer available. Can anybody tell me what a suitable equivalent would be. This is a mains wired 2-wire thermostat in a box 85x85mm. I'd prefer one with a digital display but not a wireless version.

    Conservatory roof

For anybody interested it dawned on me at 3 o'clock in the morning that maybe I can attach a ratchet strap between the house wall and the bottom of the glass and pull the glass up. It only needs to go an inch.

    Conservatory roof

Many thanks. Having spent Sunday morning looking it over, it's obvious that the original installers made a pretty terrible job of it. I think they must have known they were about to be fired. But at least I've got a good understanding of how it's meant have been put together. Only two of the...

    Conservatory roof

I have a lean to conservatory with a steep angled roof (pitch ca. 40 degrees). The glass panels are in 2 sections each about 2 metres long, so each section has 4 metres of double glazing, which is pretty heavy, and some of the glass has slipped. The original installer went bust and it's well out...

    Router advice wanted

Thanks folks, I've been experimenting today. I figured that if I'm going to make my own template starting with a jigsaw I might as well just jigsaw the corners of the table. I've tried it on a bit of scrap pine and reckon it's possible to do a decent cut then sand it down. I've got one of those...

    Router advice wanted

Many thanks. I don't think I can use 1/2" bits - I got that bit wrong, the max is 5/16". However just so I understand this, if I have a top bearing bit, is it feasible to make a partial depth cut, then reset the depth so the bearing is resting on the workpiece instead of the template, then keep...

    Router advice wanted

I've got a Bosch POF 1200 AE router. So far I've only done minor bits of edge trim, but I want to trim down a table which is too big for my kitchen. This involves cutting the top to size, then rounding each corner to a 4.5 cm radius, then running all the way round with a moulding pattern. It's...

    The Big One radiator

Sorry I think I may be describing the columns differently. I've counted left to right though the water is going the other way.

    The Big One radiator

You're right - I've no idea where this diaphragm/baffle fits, but I'd expect it has to go in the bottom connecting bar between columns 2 and 3. Not sure what this means, but it's a conventional pumped central heating system. I've got a gravity fed condensing boiler with header tanks, and a...

    The Big One radiator

Great thanks. So I turned off all the other rads in the house and got only the Big One going. I got an IR thermometer on it and it shows the central column heating up to 44 degrees but it's pretty much the same all the way up. The other two are 33 to 36 degrees. It seems any heat is rising just...

    The Big One radiator

You need to zoom in but on the bottom right there are various connection configurations which have an asterisk on - 120, 320, 430. Above this it says *By mounting the diaphragm. There's no mention elsewhere of the diaphragm on this document though. I will shut all the others down first and see...

    The Big One radiator

Many thanks. As is usual I ask a question then find stuff that had never come to light before. I'm attaching a data sheet I've found. In this it looks like my set up is as per 320 in the bottom right of the page. It says I should have a diaphragm fitted, but I don't know where this would go or...
