    Soil Stack alteration

The soil pipe is currently exposed in the bathroom because all the plasterboard has been removed. The pipe follows the internal side of an external wall. At ground floor level it is currently imbedded in an internal wall - but it will be exposed when they knock the ground floor wall down next...

    Soil Stack alteration

I'm about to add an extension to my 1960's house. I'm putting in a complete new central heating system and refitting an existing bathroom and removing a small cloakroom in the existing house. In the extension will be a new shower and utility and kitchen. My builder suggests replacing a...

    Reregistering an old boiler

I've just bought a house and there is a relatively new Valiant boiler in the laundry. I would like to move this boiler to a rental home that I own and purchase a new boiler for the new house. My gas man tells me I cannot do this - that once registered, a boiler cannot be reregistered at a new...

    House Rewire

Well, hopefull this is a starter home and I am trying to keep the cost down so every little expense adds up. The appliances are free standing and there are no children about. So I guess I can strike the FCU's off my list.

    House Rewire

I don't want them if they are going to cost a lot of money.

    House Rewire

Thank you Taylortwocities, ericmark, JohnW2 and Winston1. I gather that having a full list of all my requirements is absolutley essential so that all electricians can quote like for like. I have found a list on this website which gave me a fairly good template. The walls in the house are in...

    House Rewire

Daughter just bought a smallish 1930's semi in Wolverhampton. It needs rewiring, new kitchen, bathroom. It's completely empty. Being a complete novice in house renovation, can anyone give me a point by point step procedure for getting the house rewired. I have a list of all the electrics...

Foam on the underside of roofing tiles to make them watertig

Palaceray What were the reasons for having those roofs with the foam on the back removed? as this is quite a new and costly procedure to have applied to a tile roof. Our vendors paid £15,000 in 2004 and were given a 25 year guarantee. We want the roof removed on our house because of the...

Foam on the underside of roofing tiles to make them watertig

Thanks Palaceray. So charging twice the price for the job would be taking the mic? He quoted £10,000 for both sides of the semi and then suggested doubling the price for the removal of the foam - and siad it would take a month to do. Does that sound right?

Foam on the underside of roofing tiles to make them watertig

I'm in the process of purchasing a semi-detached and the home buyers survey has shown up a problem with the roof. In 2004, the vendors had foam applied to the underside of the roofing tiles to create a watertight seal in the lofts of both sides of the semi - they owned both - and still do. The...

fitting a new external fire door

maybe i need to get a carpenter in to have a look at the neighbours door and advise me if they have done a good job or not. yes, 6 doors, nearly £5000 and then £100 to cart away the old doors - i won't even go into the cost of installing the communal front door which was over £10,000 split...

fitting a new external fire door

We were given a leaflet by the coucil and from this leaflet we could choose one of four doors. In our block of flats, three of the tenants own and three are council tenants. The quote for the new communal front door and the 6 apartment doors was divided evenly between the six flats. The...

fitting a new external fire door

The council has arranged to fit a fire door to my front door. I live on the 1st floor of a 3 story building and I own my flat. The neighbour across the landing has had the work done and they have replaced his 32 inch door with a "regulation industry standard minimum" 28 inch door. This means...

    plumber vs plumber advice

Did someone place a bet on exactly what my problem would be? I won't go into the details - but - I had to print out all your suggestions and hire a second plumber. Then I had to read out your instructions to him and even then he couldn't ... well never mind, it got fixed in the end. I could...

    plumber vs plumber advice

Oh dear. Spoke to my builder and he doesn't understand what you guys mean. I think that what you are saying is that all the new mixer taps need a single valve check on the tails. My builder has never heard of these before. It's quite possible that all three of the new taps are causing my...

    plumber vs plumber advice

Also answers to your questions. Tony - there is a small tank in front of the larger tank - photo impossible - as the tanks are contained on a small platform above the stairs to the loft conversion - accessible through a hole in the wall and just below the roof. John D - the new bathroom mixer...

    plumber vs plumber advice

Thank you, thank you, thank you. There is a new mixer tap in the bathroom sink. It has a swivel handle with spout. A replacement electric shower was fitted but at the opposite (and more ergonomic end of the bathtub) which required some rewiring. I think the new bath taps might be mixer taps as...

    plumber vs plumber advice

The overflow pipe from the tank in the loft is leaking - a lot. My property has been emply for the past three months while I've had a new kitchen and bathroom put in. During this period the central heating, hot water and electricity have all been shut off. The water stop cock has also been...
