    concrete base

...building a concrete base that will have 75-100mm concrete depth The area is 9 square metres Is this too much of an area to mix using a cement mixer rather than getting ready mixed delivered? How long will concrete last in terms of being able to manipulate it so that i can tamp it down...

    Hot Tub area? Ideas needed.

I didn’t really want to do it, I was rough yesterday and today I thought I’d best get on with it while the weather was good. I got my son to shovel the ballast and bring the cement and I chucked it in the mixer then in the hole. I just e-mailed Celotex about using it outside but I think I’ve...

    My pricing a garage!

Im looking advice from other builders with vast experience. Ive been working in the building trade over 20 years working for all different trades and have experience on building garages, renovations on day work, pricing small jobs for myself. Ive built garages on my own along with a labourer...

    Workshop base

Afternoon ladies and gents. I’m going to be building a workshop in the next month or so as my 30th birthday present and will create a build thread in due course on the ‘your project’ part of the site. I have a question regarding the base. How thick do I need to go??? The workshop is going to...

    Motor Terminals

Sorry chaps ,just getting the hang of the image editor. I need to know how to wire this . It's a potential replacement candidate for a cement mixer. I just want to see if it works before investing time and money in it. The box has four terminals, diagonally numbered U1and U2 then 3 and four...

Extension / Garage conversion - Screeding questions

apparently concrete/belle type mixers aren’t great for mixing s&c screeds anyway. I’ve always used em tho, too much to mix by hand, not tried the fancy mixers you can get. I’d consider getting it delivered off a truck tho

Extension / Garage conversion - Screeding questions

Thanks 23vc, I'm a screeding virgin! The area is approx 2.5m x 3m bonded running into 2.5m x 1.8m floating. What ratio is the cement slurry mix? I'll do that. Mixer came from a mate but I think I can mix it in situ. Good call re the knee protection - visit to screwfix in the morning! What...

Extension / Garage conversion - Screeding questions

Have you ever screeded before? What size area are you screeding? It’s at the “pretty hard” end of the DIY building work scale. I’d brush a slurry coat of cement and water over the existing slab first. Re. Mixing it, last time I did it I think I did 8 shovels sharp sand, 4 (1 bag) cement, another...

Hi, I'm looking for some guidance with a screeding task I have to do in the next couple of days. I'm self-building a corner extension to the side of my kitchen and rear of my garage and also converting the rear 2m of the garage to a utility room. The existing kitchen floor level is around...

    Garage Self Build

That's what I did, except I haven't sold it as I keep starting new projects. Easily paid for itself. Worked out great. In fact I've bought a few tools which have proved very useful. Didn't hire much at all. Mine was under 30m2 so didn't need building regs. No plumbing. Just the electrics which...

Pouring a thick concrete slab into a hole full of water

I came across the Tremie method whilst looking on the web for a solution, but I had not come across the Bentonite one. Both seem a bit complex to achieve for a comparatively small hole, especially seeing as I am mixing and pouring the stuff myself. I think I am going to have to go with the...

Building a party wall in the loft - advice needed

...Jude, for extra detail regarding costs. For Main Loft Area I mixed mortar (5bags of builders sand with 1 bag of cement) in garden in cement mixer and carried into loft in buckets. I cannot remember how many bags I needed, but It felt a lot. As main house was 8meters deep and 2m high in loft...

    Concrete mix query

Gotcha. It will provide you with a weaker than standard 6:1 mix but not by much. Why the scientific measuring for the strength of concrete? Are you building a dam? Concrete is not cement by the way.

Sub-standard service from DIY & Hire Shops

I've not used Jewsons for hiring but they seem to be a bit more expensive. Might give them a try though from this thread the wise advice seems to be to to concentrate on the smaller companies if at all possible.

Sub-standard service from DIY & Hire Shops

...must vary from branch to branch but my local Jewsons has been more than helpful to me. The guy in the depot bent over backwards to get a cement mixer to my home address with little notice (or rather none!), alright that was down to my bad planning at the time, but they resolved my issues when...

    Paddle Mixer

I have an SDS drill but don't like it being covered with cement and such like and falling over all over the place once that paddle is on it... If I could buy a dedicated mixer at a reasonable price, I would much prefer that.
