New busbar for split-load consumer unit converted to all RCBO

Those old hagers had the busbar clipped in to the moulding of the case and a half din rail to hold the breakers in place. The clips would often bust off and the whole circuit breaker assembly was free to flap about and just fall off the din rail. The whole unit is junk and needs replacing.

How do you mark up blockwork for first fix?

Fire a laser round to get all your boxes lined up and level. A scrap of plasterboard is great for marking block walls.

Earth wire going into bell transformer, is this ok?

I don’t know exactly how it works internally, but connecting as per the diagram allows a 5v, 6v, or 8v supply so it can’t be a centre tap and shouldn’t be earthed. As others have said though the main priority here is making safe those easily touchable exposed live parts before someone gets injured.

    Socket failure??

Probably burnt the socket out as tumbley dryers tend to do. Replace the socket front.

    Wireless controlled relay

That looks absolutely spot on. Thanks.

    Wireless controlled relay

Hello. I’ve been to look at a job which has a decent control set up for the car park and external lighting. There is a second car park to the rear of the building which has lighting currently controlled by a photocell only. They would like the rear car park to also be switched by the main...

    Cable for 32a / 6.3KW double oven

It was posted 2 months ago. Hardly out of date. The video clearly shows a neon uses a quarter of one watt.

    Cable for 32a / 6.3KW double oven

I see nothings changed while I’ve been away and Winston is still telling lies. Watch this video where they test neon power usage. 52 PENCE per year to run a neon. Skip to 2:20

    SPDs on commercial installations

Thanks Adam that’s been really useful, and funny you should mention EV charging as the upgrade has been designed with this as a thing which may happen further in the future.

    SPDs on commercial installations

I’ve been asked to act as a consultant between the contractor and the client at a charity run community centre who are looking to replace their incoming mains distribution. The job comprises of installation of a new 250A TP&N Schneider panel board feeding submains to approximately nine...

    Electrics and lintels

I'd be concerned about the cable getting damaged when the corner bead gets attached for plastering.

Metal clad back box with square corners

It’s just personal preference really. I guess I’m old fashioned. I think the one plugwash linked to is looking favourite thanks.

Metal clad back box with square corners

Hello all I’m trying to source a metal clad back box with square corners to mount a fire alarm call point on in a steel conduit installation. As you can see it looks a bit rubbish on a box with round corners, especially an MK box with the flanged lip. Something like this box with it’s...

    400w SON replacement

You see this is where real world experience proves book learning and quoting specs of a poorly designed product to try and show how clever you are wrong. You also forgot about ballast inefficiency but never mind. I recently designed a project in a sports hall which was previously lit by 15x...

    400w SON replacement

I’ve got a commercial property which has a car park lit with 400w SON floodlights using a mixture of white and orange lamps. They have asked me about replacing the existing lights with LED fittings to reduce energy usage and maintenance. The customer is happy for all the new lighting to be...

Is this the norm now days

Personally I’d rather go with what my electrician recommended which will definitely be suitable, rather than go with what some stranger on the internet, who by the way is not an electrician and never has been, reckons might be suitable but doesn’t have to deal with the consequences if it isn’t...

    Immersion heater blank

Yeah I’ll give RM a call and see what they suggest. Just out of curiosity would the same occur with PRVs as all the unvented stainless cylinders I wire up appear to have brass PRVs or are they actually made of a different material?

    Immersion heater blank

I’m assuming it was installed by a qualified person as it’s original to the house which was built in 2013
