    Oversized blank plate

I thought about an adaptable box lid but I don’t think it will look right and will have the fixing holes in the wrong place. I think I might have to make something bespoke.

    Oversized blank plate

The plan is to punch D sized holes in the blank plate so a modular frame isn’t really suitable. I can make a flat plate blank out of steel if needs be but if there’s an off the shelf product it saves some messing about. These are standard MK blank plates which I have punched holes in and...

    Oversized blank plate

This is a bit of an unusual one! I have a flush mounted back box - the type which is used for a 6 or 8 gang grid switch. I’m looking for a blank plate to fit this box. I’m hoping to make a custom plate from a blank plate to accommodate some audio connectors, so a grid plate full of blank...

Incandescent light bulbs (tungsten) popping taking out fuse in fuse box?

The Crompton lamp factory used to be just up the road from me but sadly closed down 20 years ago and is now a housing estate.

Honestly I have no idea. I didn’t even know there were different types of RCD back in those days!

    Ashley kitchen appliance isolation switches.......

The terminals are tiny and very close together which makes it very difficult to terminate a ring through these particular switches. Also in my experience running this kind of switch at it’s rated current doesn’t always end well.

    Ashley kitchen appliance isolation switches.......

No you don’t need a yoke with click minigrid, however I would personally not use those style switches and would only use switch modules which are rated for 20A as your originals are.

    Consumer unit replacement cost

When I was doing loads of commercial PIRs as they were then known it was a regular occurrence to have RCDs exceed the permitted trip time. If this happened as others have said, it was standard practice to disconnect the load and test in isolation and the vast majority would then pass. I was...

    Full page popup adverts

Today I have experienced full page popup adverts whilst using the site. This has happened occasionally when clicking a link and is happening on both my iPhone and my MacBook Here's a screenshot: Is anyone else experiencing this or is it an issue at my end?

Device to reduce your electricity bills

Yes its still on and working although both the neon indicators have burnt out so it looks disconnected at first glance. The building opened in 1973 and I'd guess this kit was installed not long after possibly due to complaints from the neighbours

    Lighting in the loft

It sounds like you have wired your loft light to the live and switched live cable for the bathroom light switch so your light is effectively in series with the bathroom light when it is switched on and the bathroom light is off like so. You need to locate one of the feed cables and attach...

    Fire stopping gas pipe

We’ve had the plumbers in our building and they’ve left some holes in the walls which need fire stopping. The walls are about 400mm thick single skin stonework. Here are some pictures of one of the walls. The gas pipe runs through the wall in a steel sleeve and has some gaps around it...

How to Test Tridonic Digital Ballast

All you can do is prove the supply voltage to the ballast is present and correct and try plug in a lamp which you know to be working. Some of these ballasts will not strike a lamp if you plug it in when the ballast is powered. You have to plug the lamp in and then apply power. Make sure the...
