    Bath overflow fitting

Thanks, that was it. Quick response and more helpful than the non-existent technical assistance... I had tried twisting the front part originally but I wasn't sure it was unscrewing, instead only spinning around and making the gasket distort. Obviously it was unscrewing, but I didn't want to...

    Bath overflow fitting

Hi, I have a bath popup waste with overflow, but cannot figure out how the overflow part is supposed to be fitted. I've tried contacting the manufacturer/supplier but they have been no use. Looking online at similar models that have fitting instructions, the designs are different. Usually it...

Bathroom plaster/plasterboards prep before tiling & pain

I'm after a little bit of advice concerning plastering in the bathroom we're moving upstairs (early 1900s house). Three of the four walls are interior studs with moisture-resistant plasterboards fixed. One wall is exterior brickwork with original plaster. The ceiling is plaster and lathe...

    Modifying Lighting Wiring Layout

Yes, I've got it now. And I like your signature... I realised about the red/brown 'sleeving' after I'd been looking at the diagrams on here and another site for a while. None of the wiring I've seen in this house so far has that... I also saw some diagrams showing a 3 core wire being...

    Modifying Lighting Wiring Layout

Thanks, I've finally managed to work most of it out. I don't have a three gang switch yet, but at least I've made a start. Now we have... Old Entrance Hall Switch: 1 - Not In Use 2 - Exterior Light New Entrance Hall Switch: 1 - Entrance Hall Light 2 - Landing Hall Light Old...

    Modifying Lighting Wiring Layout

Okay, I am starting to get my head around the wiring. One thing I don't understand is why there are three sets of wires going to the first switch, rather than just two? I'm presuming it is something to do with the exterior light...

    Modifying Lighting Wiring Layout

Please forgive my question as I'm still trying to get my head around the different ways of wiring lights, having a light that can be controlled by two different switches, etc. Currently there are some lights in the house which are configured as so... Entrance Hall Switch: Exterior Front...

First Floor Wall - Is it providing additional roof support?

Although this is not to scale, and the numbers of timbers may not be correct, this image depicts the configuration of the roof and construction of the wall between the rear projection area of the house and the rest of the building. Is the stud wall and solid brick wall providing additional roof...

Removing ground floor wall - Lintel vs Remove Wall Upstairs?

I haven't double cgecked yet but I'm fairly certain the two-storey wall provides no support for the roof. The wall doesn't adjoin the exterior or party wall of this end terrace. It currently runs between the hall/landing and the dining area/middle bedroom. I am having a structural engineer...

Removing ground floor wall - Lintel vs Remove Wall Upstairs?

We will be removing a number of walls downstairs in our current property. One of these solid brick walls does not support any floors upstairs, but has a solid brick wall directly above, upstairs. I was wondering about the difference in materials cost between removing the wall downstairs...

17mm O/D black plastic pipe (once again!)

I'm going to visit one or some others in the week, as only the B&Qs and Wickes of this world are open on Sundays. (I'm not sure when I'll get the time in the week, though.) So a Universal Transition Coupling is the way to go? What method do these UTCs use for connection? Is it a...

17mm O/D black plastic pipe (once again!)

I've seen this come up time and time again on different websites, but I'm seeing a lot of different solutions posted. What we have is a ~17mm O/D black plastic pipe (the I/D seems to be slightly under 15mm. From what I've read this pipe was commonly used for 1970s council houses) bringing the...

    Choosing a drill

Thank you for the reply Monkeh. So, I've now got a Bosch GBH2400 on order to be delivered tomorrow. I'm happy with its spec, the recommendation and price. :) Thanks for all the assistance.

    Choosing a drill

When working on my own project indoors, will any old 110v transformer be suitable? (As opposed to purchasing the big heavy expensive ones).

    Choosing a drill

The only downside of going for cordless in my mind has been the battery life, and extra expense for the same performance. I don't know whether I should consider corded now, and purchase cordless at a later date in addition. That way I have both available depending on the circumstances, and...

    Choosing a drill

Thanks for the suggestions. In line with what big-all posted too, I'm going to avoid the non-industrial and only look at the trade brands. Those drills are good for the price, but what about if going for cordless? I do like the additional specific screwdriver functionality of some drills, but...

    Choosing a drill

Judging by what I've seen so far, I'd be looking at more than double the price to go SDS cordless. This is the cheapest I've found so far: £200 - Hitachi DH24DVC I'm prepared to go the extra cost though for a better long-term investment on such a fundamental tool.

    Choosing a drill

Good points. Although it won't be a problem with corded right now, in the future it could very well be.

    Choosing a drill

Trade really, I guess. It will be used while working on homes that need total refurb, rather than just the odd job now and then. It will be getting a lot of regular usage, so I was looking at those with a more powerful motor and so should also have a more robust build, as I want something...

    Choosing a drill

    I'm looking for a little help with deciding which drill to purchase. At the moment I'm looking at the following: Ryobi: EID-750RS - 750w - 2800 rpm EID-1100RS - 1100w - 1200 / 3200 rpm Bosch: PSB 750 RCE - 750w - 3000 rpm Einhell: RT-ID105 - 1050w - 1100 / 3000 rpm Draper: 45808...
