    Multitool blades

The multi-tool is the most incorrectly named tool on the planet. It does one thing. A drill is more multitool than a multitool is.

Joist hangers too big for joists?

Its all fully nailed in now, plus might not have fitted in another position anyway as I had to custom cut each length. I'll see how it is when the floor is on, its only a couple mm high so might be ok. If its difficult to get the T&G down I'll plane it a little.

Joist hangers too big for joists?

Its all in now and Im pretty pleased with it. I had to use some 5mm packers and a couple of 9mm packers (used sheet plywood offcuts). I installed the joists crown up as you're supposed to. One of them is a little higher in the middle compared to the others. Do I just fit the flooring anyway...

Joist hangers too big for joists?

I used the 3mm face fix ones, they are much thicker and don't bend like those ones.

Joist hangers too big for joists?

I've never seen rough sawn in these dimensions. 6x2 and 8x2 c24? I got this from a builders merchant not a diy shed. You seem to be from my region of UK where do you buy from?

Joist hangers too big for joists?

Given there is natural variability in joist depths for each nominal size, I would have thought they should make the joist hangers to the smaller of the range so that you can then level them up when fitting without needing shims. It's probably just under 145 on most of them but yeah there is a...

Joist hangers too big for joists?

Ok just means cutting a load of 5mm slices off the 6x2. Bit awkward.

Joist hangers too big for joists?

Doing this job today so hoping for quick response. I have several 6x2 joists to fit so I bought nominally 6x2 hangers. But the joists are closer to 140mm height and the hangers are more like 147mm, so the top of the hanger sticks above the top of the joist. I need the tops level/flush for...

Ledger beam on brick gable end wall questions

Hi all, This is a bit of a thread duplication as Ive posted the same question in my thread on the floors & loft subsection. However its more of a building issue and there might be people here who don't look in the other forum. The overall project is that Im boarding out my loft by installing...

How to attach new loft floor joists to existing wall plate/rafters

Hi all, so I need to do a bit more to satisfy myself that the structure is going to be secure before I start this work. What I have is a gable end wall that I need to attach the ledger beam to. This gable end wall is sitting atop a structural beam which is spanning a bay window opening in the...

How to attach new loft floor joists to existing wall plate/rafters

@robinbanks thanks. Ive cleared the area of insulation now so I can see what I have to work with. I'll try and explain but it might be easier with a diagram. This area of the loft is above a bedroom with a large bay window. The bay window is a flat roof protrusion from the house. It is...

How to attach new loft floor joists to existing wall plate/rafters

@robinbanks thanks again for the advice. I did the approach above, cutting 45 degrees and resting them on blocks sat on top of the wall plate. It seems to be ok, obviously time will tell but as you say there isn't much weight on it. In another section of the loft I would like to span a new beam...

Brickwork mortar 1:11 cement to sand mix?

Wow sounds like a job for a solicitor. Is the test you had done completely trustworthy - i.e accredited in some way so its valid in court?

Repair hole in bitumen roof felt from the inside

There is a rip in the bitumen felt covering on my roof. Ive tried Bostik Flashband tape - would not stick at all. Ive tried Gorilla waterproof repair tape - very sticky to itself but still wouldn't stick to the felt and has just peeled off. I cant apply any pressure to it because there's no...

Old ceiling joists: sagging and lack of wall plate

No comments on your specific job but in general it astounds me the things these builders got away with in past times. I know these houses are still standing so I suppose the proof is right there but when you look at the mess in which the job is done its an absolute disgrace.

Close up of corner and looking down to the wall plate itself.

How to attach new loft floor joists to existing wall plate/rafters

Thanks for the reply. That piece of timber is just a tie which is tie-ing all the ceiling joist together, it's not taking any vertical load. They have however added an additional block onto the wall plate to raise it up to sit that timber on. The joist you can see in the foreground is just a...

How to attach new loft floor joists to existing wall plate/rafters

Hi. I am boarding my loft for storage. The existing ceiling joists are small and only able to support ceiling load. I therefore need to build a new timber floor over the top of the existing ceiling. I have already completed two sections, where I was able to utilize existing brick internal...

OP do you have to put car in garage? That space would make a great man-cave.

    Repointing advice

Ive had the same dilemma and started some repointing with sand:cement but wasn't happy with it so am now planning to switch to an NHL 3.5 lime mix. However my house is solid wall 1930s and yours looks to be cavity wall possibly 1950's at a guess? So you would probably be fine with sand:cement...
