    RCD tripping

My brother in law called me as the real electrician in the family was nursing a hangover. He'd been replacing a faulty outside light (with the MCB off) and thinks he gave the cable a bit of a tug where it came through the wall and one of the RCD's tripped (wylex dual RCD board). It wasn't the...

    Combi swap quotes.

My man has condemned the old WB Junior in my rental property and he's "too old to fit boilers" Looking at the online box slingers around the £1,800 mark for a budget 24kw (little house, electric shower) with flush, stat and mag filter. Need a 5 year warranty as I'm flogging within that...

    Fixing twinwall chimney flue brace.

Best way to attach the braces? The left side I'll drill a hole in the hip tile and stick a packer under and screw through into the rafter. The right hand one should be about 1/3 down from the ridge. Brackets are just little angled things to screw in and instructions are useless.

Best flow/return temperatures Band B boiler

We finally have enough radiators in our house (after extension/renovation relying on just a few in the wrong places running at full tilt to keep the house fairly warm) to maintain a nice temperature. What should the boiler be set at? We have a megaflo so I presume there's a minimum (flow...

    Sky cable repair

While fitting the radiator on the right I've drilled through one half of the shotgun cable. I've ordered a repair kit (4 f plugs, 2 barrels and a few m of cable) which will allow me to replace from where I've accessed the cable back to the TV (which lives on the other side of the wall). I'm...

    Lvt stair nosings

Out of these 2 which would be best? I prefer the first one for a few reasons, but I'm worried that there's nothing restraining the edge - so would the right adhesive glue it down forever?

Remove zone valve and room stat

I've just fitted a Wiser Hub and Stat. What's the best way to get rid of the old stat in the wiring centre so my new thing still works (currently just turned up)? It's connected Gr - 2 and Br - 3 in the wiring centre, at the stat it's (from the left) Bl (N), Br and Gr. Thanks.

Filler or caulk for pinholes and fine cracks

I've just mist coated my self skimmed ceiling, which after some serious sanding is looking pretty good. I now have some small dents, pinholes and fine cracks on the board joints. Would a scrape of caulk or filler be better? I think caulk would avoid needing to sand the filler etc?

    Smart thermostat

Can anyone recommend a smartish heating control? I have a heat only boiler with a cylinder and 2 heating zones controlled by 2 x 2 port valves - but the second zone (upstairs) is just slaved off the downstairs zone ( no separate stat, just means while downstairs is on we can switch upstairs on...

    Magnetic cleaner recommendations

I'm fitting a few used radiators to my system and while they seem pretty clean I know there's going to be some rust inside simply because they've been sat empty for a while. I'm looking for a decent magnetic cleaner that will be easy to fit to my horizontal return pipe, and if it exists, -...

    Oil radiator overheat stat

Can anyone help with this? I don't know whether it's 175 or 75? Both seem available for these things.

    iPhone to 3.5mm adapter

My son wants to plug his iPhone 13 into my car stereo, it has an aux adapter that pretends to be a cd changer which works fine with my phone with a 3.5mm to usbC adapter: We bought this from home bargains but it doesn't work - I know my adapter needed to include a DAC to work with my...

    Touran front suspension knock

So I've had this for about 3 years, 10k miles, and 2 mots without comment - it's now got a lot worse and the top mount/bearing which was replaced about 2 years ago with a cheap part had failed again. While the top mount (identified by a big "twang" as the spring twists and releases) is likely a...

    Megaflo immersion heater

I've just got a megaflo Eco to replace my megaflo HE due to dissolving baffle. The Eco doesn't have an immersion fitted, so will the one from the HE swap over to it? Cylinders are indirect, 145L.

    Good Freeview recorder

For my 70yr old brother in law. Previously had VM package at late father's house but now in his own place and won't pay, at the moment also not keen on paying for any broadband but may be persuaded in future - so something easy to use to watch and record Freeview fed from aerial, with...

    Filler, stains, varnish.

I'm looking for the best way to match what's left of the existing wood to my new oak cappings. The strings will need a bit of "wood coloured" filler in places, the cappings currently just have one coat of clear varnish.

    SLC on top of SLC

Poured 18 bags over 30m of concrete, managed to cover it all but ran out of stuff so need a second coat (a skim up to about 3mm at the lowest point). I'll be using Mapei 1210 (apparently stands for 1-10mm, clever!). The previous stuff and primer used is pictured below. How long before...

    Cutting down led strip light

I need to cut this led strip light down - the terminals and 1 led - will this break it?

    Solder fail

It's the brass tap connector. I'm (clearly) not great with soldering. It was cleaned and fluxed etc but weeping. Is it possible to "repair"? I think better to just redo it - can I just clean up the copper and brass with wire wool (do I have to get all the old solder off?) or just start again...

    Extending soap pump

I want to fit one of these to my kitchen, there won't be enough room for the bottle underneath (due to dishwasher) so will it work ok if I extend the pipe (say 200mm)? I don't want to be pumping it like an idiot but hopefully the extra pipe will be full of soap and it'll just work?
