Painting the metal of a Victorian fireplace

I have cleaned up a victorian fireplace and was going to give the cast iron parts a coat of black paint. I bought some 'Rustins heat resistant Black paint' to do the job but have just noticed they also do a 'High heat' version as well. Should I be using the latter one as presumably it is more...

water damage - what to do?

Found a smallish patch of water damage in kitchen flat area. Looks like there has been some leak/flooding at some point and not dealt with. The flooring was bending/bowing under-foot so I've taken that up and found it still wet and crumbling underneath. See pics. Firstly just trying to dry it...

    'sealing' masonry paint

I've used masonry paint on interior concrete. It will get walked on a little, here and there, what would be best to put over the top of it to 'seal' it? I'm guessing floor varnish isn't the right thing?

what colour for interior brickwork in old chimney?

I'm deliberating what to do with this brickwork, I've just re-pointed it as it was in a bad state, having not being touched since built. (victorian) But feels too worn to leave as 'exposed. So what colour to paint, given the surrounding wall is a deep red.

Hi. The ponds at my mums house are leaking and I was going to try and clean out and re-seal over the summer. First: They are concrete with some sort of painted fibreglass (?) sealant. (which is leaking) This is at least 30 years old. Do I remove all this first or simply go over over it with a...

    Insulating floors in victorian house

After a bit of advice or comments on what I'm thinking of doing: Recently bought a large victorian terrace that hasn't been touched for a good few years. There's a sizeable draught coming up through the ground level floors. The house has a double cellar & a crawl space at the back end...

washing machine not draining ( Zanussi essential )

Relatively new & little used washing machine is not draining. Everything works fine until it hits the draining part of the cycle & then just pauses with water in the drum & won't move on. I've cleaned out the filter. (nothing in there) Undone the pipe underneath, between the drum & the...

    Skimming onto Victorian plaster?

Hello all. Just sorting out my living room. I've opened up the fireplace & now I need to sort the walls. I stripped off all the woodchip to reveal two walls which (i think) are the original victorian plaster. (there is horsehair in it) The other two walls have been skimmed at some point in...

    Woodworm ? Rot? or both?

I noticed one of the floorboards was "bouncing" near the back door and pulled up the carpet to find the floor in a bit of a mess. The house is Victorian & been bodged here and there over the years. Started pulling up the floorboards and found the joists to be crumbling (more so towards the...

Can anyone recommend me builders in the manchester area. Only a smallish job. Victorian house, want to open up fireplace (which has been botched over the years) & need a lintel putting in, so basically restoring it to original & it will obviously need plastering over to finish the job.

    re-installing victorian fireplace

Just starting on re-installing a victorian fireplace (will be a working fire) and started pulling plaster off. There was a gas fire fitted sometime in the 60's I guess. The original hole has been built up with breize blocks & I was expecting to find a lintel of some sort, or a brick arch, above...

    Restoring old pine

I'm currently stripping down the wood from various parts of the house. Its victorian era pine; I'm wondering what is the best way to finish it off now that it is free of paint. Should I oil, wax or varnish? What are the pros & cons? Is one better than the other in terms of durability...
