    Ranch style stair rail replacement

We've a "ranch-style" staircase we'd like to replace with a conventional handrail/spindle job. How difficult would it be, bearing in mind the narrow gap and the fact we don't want to be swapping / cutting newels. Also, the centre "newel" half way up - what's it for? Extra support for the stairs...

    external tile section in wall

What's behind these tiles? Why did builders use them (cost & speed?) and what problems, if any, are associated with them? About 35 years old, what could I get them replaced with? Don't say wibbly pvc please, is there any solid (or solid looking) replacement for this stuff. Will I have issues...

    roofers rough idea?

Hi, we have a house about 8.5mx5m with a single pitch roof that has a valley in it at one end (next door's house is at right angles to ours). We've been told that our tiles would not be allowed in a new build, as the angle is too shallow and there's insufficient overlap, and some are cracked and...

    Durgo or no-go?

Hi all. I am becoming increasingly confused as to where a Durgo can/can't be used. My bathroom has a 110mm soil pipe running down through the roof, loft, bathroom, cupboard downstairs and into a clay drain in the concrete floor of said cupboard. It then runs out below the front of the...

    Angle of the Dangle

Hi all, and thanks to those who helped on previous queries. I have a Marley strap-on boss for 40mm bath waste onto 110mm p.v.c. soil pipe (Marley part no. sws 410xr), but unlike the bosses built in to branches or boss collars, there is no 2.5 degree angle built in to this. Is this going to...

Do I need a shock arrestor/ mini expansion vessel?

We are considering fitting a Mira Combiflow shower to our WB 24i system. The Mira instructions don't make it clear whether a mini expansion vessel is necessary in my case ( no prv anywhere in system) in one section it says it must be fitted, in another it says its only needed if a prv is...

    drain in middle of floor

Well ok, not in the middle but its 210mm from the wall to the centre line of the 4 inch clay soil system in my concrete floor. Looking at new crappers, this seems to limit my choice. Apart from the inch or two I would gain by a space saving pan connector, anybody got any ideas on connecting a...

    Flush pipe dimensions

I have a low level wc, and was wondering if shortening the flush pipe would have any undesirable side effects? Want to lower the cistern mostly, but also move the pan back a little. Don't know if there are any regs or commonsense rules about this, any input greatly appreciated. Cheers.
