    Aluminium Windows at non-insane prices

Hi I'm looking for a 'box window' in aluminium or ali-clad wood. It's not particularly big (1800mm w x 1500mm h x 600mm d). No openings. I've had three quotes all for around the £2.5K mark. Can anyone recommend somewhere that won't charge the earth for this? Cheers, Steve

Best consumer units at the moment?

Hi folks, I know these come in and out of preference as times change, but what is generally considered to be the best consumer unit / RCBO combination at the moment. Will be needing 14 ways in total. Cheers!

    Which heat-only boiler?

Hi folks. Realise this may be a contentious question but which heat only boiler are the professionals recommending at the moment? It's an open vented system and we have a water softener which I believe rules out anything with an aluminium heat exchanger.

    Vaillant VRC470 clock battery?

Hi Does the VRC470 have a battery backup for the clock? Every time the power goes off, mine resets to 9AM on 01/01/2010 - which is a pain. None of the programming or other settings are lost, just the time and date. Is it faulty? Cheers, Steve

Vaillant discontinue VRC 430 before replacement is in stock?

Hi Earlier this week, I ordered a VRC 430 to partner a Vaillant 831 combi. When I got the delivery note, I noticed that the 430 had been replaced with a 470 (20108130) but that it was out of stock. The 470 is a lovely looking unit with a much improved graphical interface and a few extra...

New paint making the old paint peel off

Hi I painted my hallway about four years ago in white emulsion. It was beginning to look a bit grotty so I decided to repaint it this weekend. The new paint (Dulux pure brilliant white matt) has caused the old paintwork to bubble up and fall off revealing the original underlying paintwork...

    Fixing railway sleepers

Hi I'm running a line of railway sleepers around the edge of my patio. They will be sitting directly on an old brick wall which I have taken down to ground level. I'm thinking a bed of mortar of some description will be the best thing? Any advice on how to mix and apply? Thanks!

    Boiler Replacement - Preparations

Hi I'm replacing an old and gradually failing Vokera boiler with a Vaillant 831 in a couple of weeks time and wanted to seek advice on any preparatory work that you think would be advisable. The system is plumbed entirely in Hep2O apart from the radiator tails. Six of the radiators are of...

Large(ish) Home Cinema Install - Lots of pictures!

Hi Folks, Been a lurker on these forums for a while but I though I'd post a photo diary of sorts showing my home cinema install. All done by myself except the plastering - loads of DIY involved covering quite a few trades. The basic detail of the install is that it's a 'floating wall'...

Hi I need to make a base for a fairly large hot tub. The size is 2.4M x 2.4M and I'm aiming for a 100mm base thickness. Could someone please advise what the best concrete mix would be and how to calculate the quantity of materials required. Any particular ground preparation needed...

Advice sought on powerful yet attractive kitchen extractor

Hi I've got an island extractor over the hob which does a great job with steam and the usual cooking smells - however it is (quite obviously) useless at dealing with smells / smoke / steam from the ovens which are located across the room. I'm looking for a big, powerful, and most...

    Outside Power Distribution

Hi I know there are a lot of threads on these subjects, but I have some rather specific questions that I would appreciate advice on. A bit of background:- Our property is built on a hill. About half way down the garden there is a retaining wall 1.8M in height. There is a summerhouse at...
