    hi Tom, you will need to prime it, if you have got mdf primer you might as well use it I would'nt normally recommend it as it's just a marketing ploy any wood primer is fine!.if your glossing best to undercoat aswell as the brown colour will "grin" through if you don't put enough coats on! hope...

    Do I need to knotseal new pine shelving?

    HI DAN,if you do want to stain for a smarter look u dont need to seal the knots if you do your have ugly dark shiny patches where youve applied the knotting!.as for staining you could use a stain/varnish (coloured varnish) which 1 coat will be fine for shelving,hope that helps!
