    Large screw.. small head??

Thanks for the responses. Indeed I may resort to filing/grinding/cutting off the excess heads - but we're talking 7 shelves, 3 metal strips with 2 fixings each = 42 screws so I'd be at it for a while!! The shelves will hold books - including one of large 'coffee table' books which are...

    Large screw.. small head??

I'm planning to fit some shelves into an alcove by making 'rails' either side + back out of 8mm steel square bar, with housings routed into the sides (and back) of the shelves. The shelves are only 25mm thick, so I'm short of space to work with... My problem: what screws can I use for a...

Celotex/Suspended floor - perimeter to (damp?) wall...

I am insulating my timber suspended floor with 80mm celotex. Should I fit celotex between the final joist and an exterior wall? It includes a bay window, under which I found rotten joists (replaced, treated adjacent, DPM under new plates etc). The celotex would be very near the level of a...

Patching in floorboards - reclaimed or new?

I need to replace some boards in a 1920s house - most likely still has the original boards. Planning to sand the boards and stain quite dark (Dark Oak/Tudor Oak/Jacobean Oak) A builder I asked confidently told me some brand new boards would be fine if I rub a bit of tea on them and then stain...

8mm Climaflex on interior heating pipes under celotex

I am insulating my timber suspended floor, and so need to insulate the central heating pipe runs underneath it. I have loads of 8mm (x15mm) climaflex type insulation, but my question is, is that adequate, or do I need something thicker? The pipe runs are towards the middle of the house...

    Table Lamp Circuit Best Practise

Should a table lamp circuit - ie 2A or 5A sockets controlled by a dimmer - be a fused spur from a power ring or a (fused?) spur from a lighting circuit? (It's not easy to give it it's own MCB in the consumer unit in this case). The dimmer controlling it will be 2 gang, with ceiling lights...

    Long Smelly Waste...

Thanks Nige F and Hertsdrainage2010! Don't think the gulley is to blame - as there's no smell when we use the shower - which tees into the same waste as the washing machine. Everything else ends us there too - bath, dishwasher, kitchen sink etc etc, but the smell is only noticeable when the...

    Long Smelly Waste...

In their wisdom, previous owners of my house placed the washing machine at the opposite corner of my house to any other plumbing. Actually, plumbing aside, it's quite a good place for it - and I can't think where else it can go. However, everytime it drains (via a hopper into a gulley), it...

    Ceiling flush kitchen extractor

(Hope this is the right forum!) Does anyone know a good manufacturer of extractor fans I can mount in the ceiling directly above my gas hob? I don't want to use a normal 'hood' as it would take a lot of light from an adjacent window. I know a company called 'Westin' make them - but...

    Weeping MDPE fitting

I may be imagining it, but the leak appears to be slowing slightly - more like a teaspoon in 10 secs at the moment. Can't be the famous curing properties of london limescale already can it?? Cheers all

    Weeping MDPE fitting

Hi All - and Happy Christmas! Have a Hepworth 25mm MDPE to 22mm hep2o stopcock which is weeping from the supply side, water coming from inside the nut on the mdpe (which is actually a plasson fitting, joined and resold by hepworth) The mdpe is slightly scratched - but I have smoothed the...

    Hep2o 'Sideways' force

...my point exactly - you CAN get a tee onto a hep20 curve, but obviously the original pipes would be under stress - as would the fitting. My question is, can that cause problems. (Would only work with plastic pipe of course, and obviously not a tight curve either) Thanks!

    Hep2o 'Sideways' force

Hi All Is it ok to fit Hep pipe and fittings in such a way that they will be subjected to force? For example, adding a tee to a curved section of pipe, which would result in a force at either end of the tee. Thanks Dan

    Valiant/megaflo discharge

thats what I'm thinking. Megatech heats from stone cold and brim full... drip drip drip drip drip. What it doesn't explain, is that reheating from warm, there's no discharge, but the expanding water must be going somewhere?! I'd contact the original installer, but he's gone to Canada...

    Valiant/megaflo discharge

Had a look at the installation manual - does indeed appear to need an external EXV. Surely the lack of this is a problem? Or am I missing something?
