Yes there is an electric shower-soon to be replaced with a mixer. Lintel: the two struts supporting the lintel seem to be OK. Do you think I could just replace the horizontal part of the lintel with a concrete one and leave the two brackets in place?

That looks pretty good, thanks for that suggestion. I'm not sure if the middle section is wide enough to accommodate the wallplates though. If it's 3/4 inch then it will be OK. So I guess I'll have to try and find out.
