Trouble shooting an RCD protected circuit

Productive day and things are working again. went through and eliminated parts of the ring main cleaning and re fitting sockets (some quite damp with copper cancer) cant be 100% sure the source but the last few sockets I worked on I found one with both a lose earth and neutral so maybe that was...

Trouble shooting an RCD protected circuit

I investigated a bit further.... disconnecting the neutral from the socket circuit in the cu and everything else works. So Neutral/Earth leak on the ring main I assume ? I disconnected the oven/hob (ignition only) extractor, boiler and a pair of wall lights and no change. If I disconnect only...

Trouble shooting an RCD protected circuit

They left on very amicable terms and I still hold a sizeable deposit. She contacted me on the day, said she had called her nephew that was an electrician and had tested over the phone what she could. His comment apparently was its something in the unit. Strange timing though, a day where lots...

Trouble shooting an RCD protected circuit

Again pretty sure I have tested these scenarios but I will double check. I spent an hour there yesterday going through pretty much every combination, including I belive all of the above. I went as far as to swap the two main RCD over in the consumer unit and the problem stayed in the same...

Trouble shooting an RCD protected circuit

Thanks for the quick replies guys. The MCB's on that half of the box dont have any effect, when switched off the RCD still wont reset. There are 2 external power sources but both are run from 13amp plugs and both are disconnected. The Neutral/Earth scenario sounds likely so it will probably...

Dumb ideas for internal doors ?

I have an old house I'm renovating, all the internal doors are wreaked but they are also odd sizes. I'd be happy with plain veneer doors, maybe just plain white, beach, something simple. Now due to the sizes being very odd my intial thought was to buy cheap hollow doors, cut and the re...

    Thin Floor Screed...

Hi, I need to level a rough floor, think surface of the moon and you get the idea. Seriously its probably got around 1 - 1.5 cm of variation in a room 2m x 4m. Latex would be very easy but very expensive, a full floor screed of normal sharp mix would be too thin. I can come up about...

    Rising Damp or not?

Hmm.. I'm no expert but it sounds like you just plastered over the problem. I'd go to the yellow pages and get a few damp proofing companies to come around and give their opinions. I expect they will suggest remove all plaster, inject chemical damp proof, render and plaster again. Also...

    Cracks in rendering above window

With that picture its impossible to tell. That said a lot of houses do move a little and that is a common place for any movement to show its self and it could well be nothing from a structural perspective. If you look at the same location inside is there any cracking, also any in the celling...

    Insurance during building renovation

Not true unfortunately, after several hours calling around very few will insure an un occupied house, even less if its been that way for years, and even less again if its undergoing renovation. I have found a broker that has a range of products and I have gone with one of them. Thanks anyway.
