    Chimney soot door- cavity wall

vinn, I didn't include much detail. I am reinstating an old open fire in a dining room. Chimney sweep could not get past second bend in dog- leg as the soot door he wanted to access, is now covered by a kitchen extension. However, a new soot door can be fitted a couple of feet above the original...

Thanks stuart45. I'll give the slates a go, after I've removed the jackdaw nest.

    Chimney soot door- cavity wall

I have removed some bricks from outside of chimney in order to fit a soot door for sweeping access. The chimney has double walls with a cavity and I am not sure what to do about the cavity when fitting the soot door. Is there a frame that can be used or do I need to line the cavity somehow? Thanks

    Concrete Subbase_log cabin

Cheers for pointing out my error of thinking the MOT layer could be a blinding layer. Glad you understood what I meant though. I have ordered all the materials and will attack this next weekend. I have also hired a mixer and an 88kg wacker plate from HSS. I like your idea about a path and I...

    Concrete Subbase_log cabin

For the blinding layer, I am going to order 1 bulk bag of MOT with the intention of obtaining a 1 inch layer. This should use ~ half a bulk bag and I am going to guess about 1/2 bag will dissapear through all the brick gaps when I use the vibrating plate I am going to hire. If I am wrong...

    Concrete Subbase_log cabin

I'm building a base for 4x3m log cabin (fancy shed) and intend to sit it on 75mm-100mm of concrete which will be poured into a form which is raised above hardcore using stakes. The hardcore is old bricks & concrete which I have sledge-hammered down to about 5-7cm pieces. I want to put a DPM...

Black, sticky tar-like substance rear of fridge freezer

At the back of my Miele fridge freezer, there is a black tar-like sticky substance that appears to be leaking from the metal pipes. What is it and is it a real issue? Thanks

    Ring main measures 600R

Thanks Bongos. As for reporting the electrician, myself and my family would be in even greater danger of death than that caused by the electrics! Just sooner get it sorted and not use the company's services again. Looking through the Electricians Guide to Building Regs and the red 17th...

    Ring main measures 600R

The advice given on here has not fallen on deaf ears and I have arranged for another spark to visit asap. In the mean time, I am hoping I have solved the broken ring as the electrician was scratching his head and said he would get back to me. He never has and doesn't answer my calls. Do the...

    Ring main measures 600R

Okay thanks to everones help on here, the broken ring main that I had has been found. The electrician came back and couldn't understand why it was measuring a break as his certificate records good end to end measurements? Must be something I had done, but I know I hadn't. I removed one...

    Ring main measures 600R

Not looking forward to using the shower in the morning, but will be getting this sorted asap. As the ring circuit appears to show a break, am I right in thinking that the MCB should trip if the cables now get overloaded.

    Ring main measures 600R

I originally requested an upgrade of the CU due to a now obsolete Chilton ELCB (the one with the yellow TEST bar), which had tripped and was difficult to reset. From what I understand, they were a bad design as if there was a fault between live and a person, they would not trip. With this in...

    B.I. Calenders junction box

The more I look, the more I find. Just found this old junction box which has 10 lighting cables going to it. Inside, the wire cores are just twisted together and capped with the white plastic screws. Doesn't look good practice to me by today's standards. Should I replace it and what should I...
