Doesn't sound like a high-pitched screeching more like a pan of water boiling. Could I try uploading a file of the sound?

The noise is continuous with the CH being on, turn on a tap and its stops, turn off the tap and it starts. Switch to HW only and its stops. The frequency of the noise is also constant.

Is the thinking that the diverter value is not allowing enough flow through the central heating system?

The diverter valve was serviced last Autumn but by me, a DIYer. Could I have done something wrong? How do I check?

Still keepin' the auld 28 going but it's getting noisy when heating the central system; quiet, almost silent when heating water. I suspect the pump is on the way out. Any suggestions on how I check? Would be much obliged for any input.

It was indeed a simple enough job. The spindle is moving, but there is some water ingress so ordering a service kit for the diverter value.

Any chance it could be a sticking non return valve on the outlet of the primary return from the plate HE? Agile Tony has written for another thread that this could also give the same symptom. I'll start with the diverter valve first however. Thanks for all the replies. A grateful kjmcdow

Thanks. The problem seems to have been with the main heating cock or I have just benefited from good luck. Just tested the fill loop, same problem as I reported. I then decided to check that the two main heating cocks could be turned off before thinking about isolating the boiler and...

Just took me over 4 hours to refill central heating system. I am thinking that filling cock on the boiler side of filling loop is only allowing restricted flow. Reason for thinking this is that flow to filling cock seems to be fine, as judged by disconnecting fill loop with mains cock open...

It was the EGR valve. It was jammed open. Mechanic diagnosed by rapping the valve housing sharply with a wooden mallet. This resulted in the car running much better, i.e the release of the jammed valve. Mechanic removed, cleaned with solvent and reinstalled. Took 30 min in total. Car...
