It was indeed. Removed, washed with acid (and then alkali 'cause I couldn't remember my chemistry), a few whacks with a rubber mallet, and then a pressure wash. It remove enough 'coal' to fuel a power station! Check out JustAnswer. I reckon you could earn some beer money.

I have cancelled British Gas.

It was the plate heat exchanger. Now fitted a magnet and it's picking up all sorts of crap.

It was indeed. Cleaned myself and got another three years out of it. British Gas have just been round to clean. Have inserted a MagnaClean so hoping this will help.

Now 5 years and counting since installation of MagnaClean and have had no problems with DHW exchanger....
