    Damp 'cracks' in render

After a bit of advice on the above pics. They were taken in the dry a couple of days ago and appear to show damp 'cracks' on the newly rendered wall of our new extension. The render isn't actually cracked but there is obviously damp coming through from somewhere. I haven't spoke to the...

Installing laminate floor up to bi-fold door threshold

Thanks for your reply. I had looked at the incizo and thought that would be a possibility. I need to get some for a threshold between rooms so that will give me a chance to see what it is like.

Installing laminate floor up to bi-fold door threshold

I am about to lay quickstep laminate floor throughout the downstairs of my newly renovated house. The skirting boards are all off so they will be replaced to hide the expansion gaps, however I'm stuck as to how to finish the floor where it butts up to the bi-fold doors? The bi-folds are 3.6m...

    Tiling training course

Thank you all for your replies - i have to admit i'd kind of forgotten that i'd posted this till today! As i suspected it sounds like a course isn't necessarily the best option. However, my friend is in the Channel Islands where the opportunity to work with an experienced tiler is...

    Tiling training course

Hi I've just spoken to a friend who has handed in his notice at his current job and has decided he would like to pursue a career in tiling. Can anyone recommend any training courses (ideally in the South-East)? He is really looking for something fairly intensive and condensed (he will be...

My Potterton Profile 80e often doesn't start up

Hi Neil I'm no boiler expert but my recent experiences with a Profile 50e may be relevant.... My boiler kept tripping out (eventually it was cutting/re-lighting almost continuously) and the radiators were only getting warm, regardless of how high the boiler stat was set. However the boiler...

    potterton profile 50e

With pipecleaners!! They've worked in places but some of the holes are blocked solid. I don't have anything else small enough to poke through. Where can i get an acid dip done?

    potterton profile 50e

I have that exact boiler currently sat in pieces on my floor! I was experiencing exactly the same problem and it has been diagnosed as a blocked heat exchanger. Is the front of your boiler getting very hot? Basically the heat/gas wouldn't pass through the exchanger so it was burning back on...

    Blocked Heat Exchanger

Just checked and its a 50e so no scrappage bonus for me :( Going to get quotes for repair (replace HE) and new boiler.....

    Blocked Heat Exchanger

It lights 'on demand' rather than having an always-on pilot light (i think  ) I'll check for the model code later when i get home.

    Blocked Heat Exchanger

How do i find out the exact model of my boiler? All it says on the outside is potterton prima profile, no reference to 30/40/50 etc. Will i be able to take advantage of the scrappage scheme bearing in mind that it is no longer working?

    Blocked Heat Exchanger

He didn't really seem to know why it had become blocked up - what are the likely scenarios? He said that he's never seen one so bad before though... Hardly any heat was getting through, yet the front panel of the boiler was too hot to touch after being on for less than 2 minutes! I'm...

    Blocked Heat Exchanger

For your information I only bought the property in December. Funnily enough the previous owners had a British Gas contract and supposedly have had it serviced...... Do you have anything constructive to add that might help me out rather than making judgements based on a couple of forum posts?

    Blocked Heat Exchanger

Thanks for your replies Sorry I should have clarified that the guy who came on Friday is gas safe and I have no intention of running the boiler! The fact that most if it is in pieces on the floor kind of limits that option..... I said i would have a go at clearing it over the weekend...

    Blocked Heat Exchanger

Hello all The heat exchanger on my Potterton Prima is blocked - the air vents are solid with soot/crap. I have managed to clear many of the holes using pipe cleaners but there are far more that are still blocked! Is there any quick solution to clearing these blockages? Any chemical i can pour...

Getting rid of an unwanted light switch

OK, i'll get myself a multimeter to test all the wires! I can take photos but my ability to post them here is probably equal to my ability to work out lighting circuits   The old guy who had the house before was a bit of a 'tinkerer' so there is a good chance i've got live wires...

Getting rid of an unwanted light switch

Thanks for the replies, but i'm still confused  There doesn't appear to be any live connection to the circuit. I assume the junction box under the floorboards would also accomodate the live feed normally? Otherwise where would it be connected into the mains?

Getting rid of an unwanted light switch

bongos, a belated thanks for your reply! I haven't done anything about this switch yet but have investigated further... If i unscrew the switch plate there is an earth (screwed into the eletrical box) then the 2 cables from the switch. The cable leads up into ceiling so i've had a look under...

Getting rid of an unwanted light switch

The previous owner of my house had fitted cupboards in the dining room which had internal lights. The units have now all gone but we are left with a redundant light switch (and i assume circuit). We'd like to get rid of it as we are about to replaster and decorate. Do i need to get an...

    hiding radiator pipework

thanks for the replies. I'm probably going to get the rooms replastered anyway, it was more the chasing out and adjusting of pipes i was concerned about.
