Laying boards over loft insulation that’s resting on boards

Our new house has a fully boarded loft with insulation laid over the boards. We’d like to store things up there without compressing the insulation. I’ve seen loft legs are a common solution if you’ve got joists under the insulation. Given we have boards underneath, are there any other options...

Cold feed blocked - how much pipe to cut?

Thanks, I guess I'll give it a few days and see how it goes. Magnetic filter sounds like a good idea - I'll see if I can find somewhere accessible to fit it onto the system...

Cold feed blocked - how much pipe to cut?

I've now cleared the blockage. It was in the lower tee (circled in my first picture). I decided against dropping out the pump, as I was a little unsure about fitting it back again without leaks. So I cut the pipe below the top tee and had a nosey with a screwdriver. That was all clear, so I cut...

Cold feed blocked - how much pipe to cut?

I was planning to cut the pipe just below the 15/22mm tee (my second picture). Is that ok?

Cold feed blocked - how much pipe to cut?

Thanks folks. So I will cut below the 15mm/22mm tee, allowing me to clear up and down the 22m pipe. If that isn't where the problem is, I'll cut the 15mm and tackle the problem from there. Stupid question, but can I use a push fit coupling to join a pipe I've sliced? Would I be able to force...

Cold feed blocked - how much pipe to cut?

The cold feed enters via a tee, slightly higher up. There is no magnetic material that I can detect at that joint. Photo below (15mm pipe is the feed coming from the f&e, 22mm is the vent. Is there any way to figure out if the blockage is there without cutting?

Cold feed blocked - how much pipe to cut?

OK, good. Yes, I've drained it already in the manner you suggest. Thanks for your help, I'll give the pipe cutting a go...

Cold feed blocked - how much pipe to cut?

What I've done so far is to drain the heating system, opened all the rad valves and also the air valve you can see in the top-left of my picture. I'll either mop out or bung the f&e tank before I do anything. Is there anything else I can do to drain things before I begin? I'm assuming there's a...

Cold feed blocked - how much pipe to cut?

Thanks for the reply. Just to check I understand, am I cutting the pipe once above the tee? If so, do I just bend it a bit to get access with the screwdriver? Also, does "drop the pump out" mean to unscrew it from the tee? Or do I unscrew the pump at both ends and get it out the way? And...

Cold feed blocked - how much pipe to cut?

Hi, Today I drained my open vented heating system to change a leaking radiator valve. The system appears to have fully drained - all radiator valves are opened upstairs and downstairs, and the draining water has stopped. The header tank is still full. Research suggests this means my cold feed...

How to reach recessed nut to change bottom-entry fill valve

Brilliant, thanks! I knew there must be a simple answer, not sure why I didn't spot those already!

How to reach recessed nut to change bottom-entry fill valve

I need to replace a broken fill valve, but I can't access the nuts at the rear of the toilet. A flexible hose disappears inside a relatively small hole and I can just see the nut if I shove a camera under there: Looking in the top of the toilet, there's nothing that suggests I should...

Conservatory guttering has no drain or soak-away

But surely the same is true for main roof guttering, yet we feel the need to drain that correctly? Do I really not have to worry about this smaller volume of water?

Conservatory guttering has no drain or soak-away

Hi, Our conservatory guttering is connected via a downpipe to a water butt. Currently, if this overflows it simply spills out onto the concrete outside our conservatory and kitchen. There is no drain outside this part of the house. All the downpipes on our main roof guttering go into our...

New plasterboard coving cracks at edges when painted

Ok, the filler seemed to be sufficient. Thanks for your help, will bear in mind in future. I guess I normally gloss over caulk (e.g. Skirting) so hadn't come across this before.

New plasterboard coving cracks at edges when painted

Sounds like the exact problem. Unfortunately, I rushed ahead and filled the teeny cracks with fine surface filler. Will that provide a sufficient barrier between the caulk and paint, or should I still do an oil based undercoat? Thanks.

New plasterboard coving cracks at edges when painted

Just regular coving adhesive. I bought a 5kg bag of powder from Travis Perkin. I filled the cracks with decorators caulk. Looking closer at the results of the third coat, it looks slightly better. I think I'll fill the cracks with fine surface pollyfilla and will try a fourth coat after...

New plasterboard coving cracks at edges when painted

Hi guys, I fitted my first set of plasterboard coving recently. My corners weren't great, but I used additional coving adhesive to hide my novice handiwork. I caulked the edges of the coving to fill any remaining gaps and started painting it (normal white emulsion). However, after the...

Boiler makes noise when flame alight. Cuts out after 20s.

Apologies for the bump, but I'd really appreciate someone's quick advice on this question as I'd like to drain the system (for the final time) tonight. To recap: My CH return pipe has no filter; instead my CH flow pipe has a filter. This seems wrong to me. Surely debris should be...

Boiler makes noise when flame alight. Cuts out after 20s.

The system has been running for five minutes now without problems. There was some debris in the filter and clearing that has certainly improved the situation. Fingers crossed, maybe it's fixed! Thank you very much for the advice. Incidentally, my filter is fitted onto my flow pipe, not my...
