    Moving heavy granite - 250kg

They ares rigid, dowelled and glued units which are man enough for the job. I'm guessing you're a man who only wears sensible shoes and has a sensible haircut (if you have hair)? I'm not sure what it is about the natural beauty and practical properties of granite that attract me and millions...

    Moving heavy granite - 250kg

Haha....fair point! I didn't have any concerns until I had to move 55m2 of limestone the other night and then considered the weight! I will make sure they have insurance etc, good point. Although I doubt they'll claim liability if my floor doesn't take the weight!

    Moving heavy granite - 250kg

Hi All, I'm having some granite installed in a couple of weeks time and the quote had the weight of each piece estimated next to it. One of the pieces is down as 270kg, although it is a curved piece so has corners cut off and wont utilise all of the slab it's cut from, so I'd estimate maybe...

Fixed door knobs - roller catch

Hi all, I'm fitting new 1930's style doors (4 panels, 3 bottom 1 above) and because of the height of the knobs and little children we want to fit good quality roller catches so the doors are easy to open. My question relates to the type of door knobs to get. Can you get fixed knobs or do...

Shower drips after switching off at 2 way valve

Hi All, I have just completed a wet room installation and have a two way diverter valve on the shower which switches between a large overhead drencher and a wall mounted shower head. When I switch off the shower the wall mounted shower head drips for about 5 minutes and dumps a considerable...

    Cleaning black grout

I did wonder that myself but I don't think it will adhere to the grout.

    Cleaning black grout

Hi All, I'm completing a house renovation and have a problem with discolouration of black grout on a wet room floor. I completed the wet room a couple of months ago and the floor got covered in dust with all of the rest of the work going on. I vacuumed and cleaned but the grout has gone...

    Floor height decision

I suppose that would allow underfloor heating throughout too. There's just something that has always put me off the engineered stuff....must be a traditionalist or something but I like the thought of solid. It is a big space so wouldn't have thought humidity would be too bad, good...

    Floor height decision

That was my initial thought but then the fixing method of both floors is different on floorboards and screed. I thought about covering everything with plywood and nailing the wood flooring but wasn't sure how to then get the height right with the tiles. Would it be best to fit the wood with...

    Floor height decision

Hi all, I am currently building an extension and need to decide what finished floor height I go for. The room is going to be an open plan kitchen/diner with suspended wooden floor in the original house and concrete slab in the extension. The dilemma I have is that I want to fit a solid...

Unvented "cold" flat roof insulation question.

I think that may be the best option for me as venting the space is going to be impractical and I can't insulate on top. I found this link regarding spray foam insulation and would be happier with the thought of no gaps when the insulation is bonded to the plywood and under the furrings...

Unvented "cold" flat roof insulation question.

Is what you describe not unvented? What would be the point in having vented soffits etc if there was no air gap for air to flow. Do you know why this system is not reliable and what the issues are? Thanks for your reply.

Unvented "cold" flat roof insulation question.

Hi All, I'm just completing a loft conversion and had to change the initial warm deck flat roof design of the dormer to a cold deck design at the last minute due to height issues. The building control officer and architect both said this would be fine and we'll sort out the insulation...

    Hip to gable extension

Yeah, sorry, should have been clearer....I had already decided not to use him because of a number of things he said "I've no idea how much stairs cost"....and...."what do you want a steel there for"! I really wanted clarification regarding the felt issue. Is the right thing to do to strip...

    Hip to gable extension

Thanks for all of your replies. I had a guy over to quote for the roof work and he seemed to be of the opinion that I shouldn't felt the roof and that using the trilayer foil insulation would be the best and cheapest option. I've already got a sample of some Airflex Superpose and he said...

    Hip to gable extension

Thanks for the replies, I think I've got it! I am definately getting some chippies to build the roof, should have been clearer. The DIY stage will be after it's all watertight just finishing off inside etc. Fo some reason I thought the gable end wall would nave to be up before the roof...
