Makita 8391D drill - motor turns but chuck doesn't

Many thanks to big-all, jj4091 and robinbanks for the very helpful replies. I did what jj4091 suggested and found that there is a lot of 'play' around the centre of the 2-speed switch. The switch has to be pushed fully home for the drill to work correctly or else the fault will reappear. I...

Makita 8391D drill - motor turns but chuck doesn't

Hi I have a Makita 8391D cordless drill. I was using it with a hole-saw on an old worktop when the chuck stopped turning, even though the motor was running OK. I can see that the shaft or spindle that connects to the chuck isn't turning. Does anyone know what part is faulty within the drill...

    Lockshield valve spindle won't turn

Thanks for the reply. It's a combi system. If it had been necessary, I would have taken pressure out of the system by opening the drain cock. I assume that I would have had to drain the whole system to change the lockshield, as the new radiator is in the kitchen.

    Lockshield valve spindle won't turn

Thank you, Madrab, for the quick reply. I did exactly what you advised. I ran penetrating fluid down the spindle overnight. This morning, I used a litlle bit of extra force and the spindle 'jumped free', as if it had forced it's way past a bit of rubber washer. Thank you again.

    Lockshield valve spindle won't turn

Hi I closed a lockshield valve (and disconnected it) so that I could replace a radiator. I reconnected the lockshield to the new radiator and then found that the spindle would move only a fraction of a turn and then stop. Even some gentle force will not turn the spindle. Does anyone know...

    Cable Tracker with Tone Generator

Thank you everyone for the replies and links - everyone has been very helpful and the vids have helped, too This explains a lot. The person who bought this originally was a trained electrical engineer - I'm not! If I have an issue with twin and earth, and switch off the incoming current at...

    Cable Tracker with Tone Generator

I have been given a "Cable Tracker with Tone Generator" which is brand new and still in the box (BNIB). What is this used for (polite replies only, please)? And a Very Merry Christmas to all!

What sort of damp is this?

Drying wet clothes indoors should be avoided. This is easy to address. Does the washing machine have a fast spin (1600 rpm) and are you using it? Have you considered buying a condenser tumble drier? These do not need to be vented to the outside; the water collects in a container that can be...

    Correct use of automatic transmissions

The MB to which the OP refers has the model number W202; it will have a torque-converter automatic transmission. I agree with much of what "avocet" has written but have the following thoughts based on my own experience of an MB with a 'torque converter'. I had a W203 with a torque converter...

Gaps around windows - How To Fill

I had a similar issue. I used some plaster from a plastic tub of ready mixed plaster. I wet the holes first and then applied the plaster. Sanded down and repeated. Eventually, it was ready for painting and blended in with the surrounding plaster. I didn't use calk as it didn't need flexibility.

Howden's bathroom thumbturn - how to remove?

Hi. Some time ago, a joiner fitted a new (primed) bathroom door and a thumbturn for privacy - probably Howdens. I need to paint the door (with acrylic water-based?). I have not removed this type of privacy knob before - only the the type that is integral with the handle.. I have slackened...

Which paint for brickwork between the roughcasting and ground level

Thank you very much Scally-Ho, accelerator, and Wayners, and apologies for the delay in replying (have been working non-stop). I will ask for a second opinion on the level of the DPC before proceeding. Also, that's a good point about the (new) red paint flaking off and old white paint showing...

Which paint for brickwork between the roughcasting and ground level

I have looked very closely for the DPC. As far as I can see, the DPC is located at soil/slab level, below the white-painted brickwork. IMO, it should never have been painted at all but the previous owner couldn't 'leave alone'. Now there is flaking/peeling/dirty white paintwork below the...

Which paint for brickwork between the roughcasting and ground level

Sincere apologies to everyone for the delay in replying. Have been 'working all the hours' since the attached photos. Thanks are due to Wayners for the detailed reply. The white-painted bricks are between the bottom edge of the roughcasting and the slabs/borders. 1) The white paint is an...

Which paint for brickwork between the roughcasting and ground level

Some advice, please. There are 3 - 4 rows of brick between the bottom of the roughcasting and the level of the garden. A previous owner has painted these with white masonry paint and it has either peeled off (after 20+ years) or looks dirty. 1) What type of paint should I use? 2) The...

Bathroom ceiling light melted wiring - likely cause?

This is a possibility. I found a loose terminal screw on the isolator switch (pull cord type) for an electric shower. The insulation on the wire (feed side, I recall) was well burnt and blackened.

Bathroom ceiling light melted wiring - likely cause?

I had something similar with a spotlight in the bathroom (1985 built house) of my previous house. There was insulation wool above the spotlight, retaining excess heat in the spotlight and above it, damaging the wiring to it. AFAIK, there should not be any insulation above the spotlight. On my...

Ceiling wiring - how to connect brown and blue wires

I disconnected a plastic spotlight (no earth wire or earth terminal) from the wires coming out of the ceiling without noting how the blue & brown wires were connected to the ceiling (my mistake - I have always connected to a ceiling rose before). The house was built about 1978. The attached...
