    Hygroscopic salts and damp seal

Not sure why my question provoked such a reply. I'm well aware of all you say, my question is can hygroscopic salts still attract damp when covered by damp seal. You had no answer to this so not quite sure why you replied as you did. Apologies if I've misunderstood your motive.

Happy New Year to all! We've got scaffolding up at the moment to sort out problems with our flashing up to our parapet.. while up there I noticed that the end of the parapet wall is finished very strangely above the fascia board (i.e. there i just a big gap there between ours and the...

Building a hearth on top of floorboards

Hi both, thanks for your responses. To clarify, the bottom of the cast iron fireplace sits 10.5cm above the floorboards. The fireplace sits on a concrete base which is inside the chimney breast, but does not protrude out of it. I agree, would be best to 'future-proof- it if possible, but I...

Building a hearth on top of floorboards

Happy New Year all! I'm looking to build a decorative hearth around a non-functional fireplace. In front at the moment are just floorboards and I've got a slab of slate to put down. Only problem is that there is 10.5cm gap between the fire and the floorboards. I've seen suggestions to...

    Clearance beneath floor joists

Thanks both for your replies. Was keen to get 170mm in for the extra insulation values, 100mm would give 2.25 R-value. i guess dropping it into the gap would provide perfect cover as there would be gaps between the joists.
