Base slab specification for small outhouse

Just out of interest, are you going to build directly on top of the slab or will you also have footings under the walls too?

    Moving the main supply cable

I'm not electrician and this could be extremely dangerous and so im in no way advising that this is done..... But as I see it.... Would it be safe to disconnect the tails whilst everything else is still connected. Then unscrewing the wooden board from the wall, moving everything in place and...

Bricking up conservatory windows (1 side)

I just read the original post again and I'd make sure that your solicitor checks all the paperwork for the conservatory. As there are no doors between the house and the conservatory, it falls into the realms of being an 'extension' rather than a conservatory. in this situation, building regs...

Bricking up conservatory windows (1 side)

If you want, then yes, you can easily batten up the wall, insulate it and finish it. I'd have looked at bringing the price down on that very basis though - If you're looking to put a cooker in there, there's a real fire risk with that set up though and I'd be careful.

    Birds in new cavity

Lol.... no if they can see the nest and reach it, they may well remove it for Roncon

Bricking up conservatory windows (1 side)

Did you put the kitchen in there? You're not supposed to have a kitchen in a conservatory? If you involve Building Regs, they may well object to this....

    Birds in new cavity

If you can see the nest and access it, you could try the NSPCA/NSPCC. It may sound far fetched but they may well send someone over to have a look and maybe take the birds away for you.

    Wall plate

The finished product looks good but to be honest, but it sounds like your BCO has really screwed you around. They generally only say that an RSJ arrangement should be used if lime mortar has been used to bind the bricks together. With your house it looks like a standard sand and cement mix has...

Bricking up conservatory windows (1 side)

You won't be allowed to put a kitchen in a conservatory.... If it has a kitchen in it, it's seen as an extension and if it's an extension, you'll have to involve building regs

Plaster off, ceiling down a few Q's before i move on

Use the fibre glass rolled type of insulation for the loft. It's cheaper and much quicker and easier to use.

Building shelves in chimney breast (moved from Projects)

I'd revisit the above, you don't always have to use steels to extend floor joists, you can use joist hangers etc to extend. It really depends on the current setup.

Building shelves in chimney breast (moved from Projects)

If you're looking to remove pieces of the chimney and there is a chimney stack above it, you need to use a lintel or a gallow bracket set up to support the stack above. If there was a fireplace above the chimney breast that you're working on, there may still be a concreted area in front of the...

Building shelves in chimney breast (moved from Projects)

If it's just in the one room (with no chimney breast above it), you're better off removing the whole thing and constructing the shelving out of wooden joists. Otherwise, you will need to support the bricks above the 'shelf' and then install some sort of lintel above every gap that you put into...

Chimney. Should I open it with gas/electric fireplace

If you fit a gas fire, you'll need the chimney working. If you use an electric fire, you won't need the chimney 'open'

Plaster off, ceiling down a few Q's before i move on

I don't quite understand this? Do you want to remove the fireplace and chimney stack? Just the fireplace? Have the windows recently been replaced? Have they got gaps in between the frames and the walls?

Laying foundations for brick garden wall on sloping ground... Advice please.

Best case scenario - it will be fine. Worst case scenario - it will crack and so will the wall above it. Is there no way that you could dig a little deeper - it will literally only need another 2 inches of soil removed or so? Or as another person suggested, wood?
