    Paint bubbling

Hi I'm just washing my walls down ready for painting and I notice the old paint has started to bubble (see attached). This is an old place with poor air flow so I have had issues with surface mold in this area in the past, no surface mold this time though. Could this be all it is or could there...

Coving and ceiling mounted light switch

Hi I am looking to install coving in my bathroom, but there is a ceiling mounted switch as you normally get in bathrooms in the way. What is the standard way of dealing with this? Do I just do mitred edges either side of it? Or cut a recess into the coving? Seems to me that either way would...

    Wood hardener or wood preservative?

Hi woody The source of the damp was failed sealant on the bathroom tiles so it will be fixed once the tiles are replaced. It is already feeling dryer this morning which is good. Is there anything I can do to aid the drying process? Or am I better to just leave it?

    Wood hardener or wood preservative?

Thanks big-all Is there any particular glue that would be best used in this situation? Or will standard wood glue do the trick?

    Wood hardener or wood preservative?

Hi I have had an issue with rotten wooden window frame. I have scraped out the rotten wood as far back until it no longer scrapes off. The wood still seems a little damp and soft but not soft enough to Scrape any more out and it looks healthy. What is the best solution to use when it comes to...

PVC window in wooden frame (threads merged)

How do you work that out? A new window would cost hundreds where as replacing this small section of wood would cost no more than a tenner

PVC window in wooden frame (threads merged)

Thanks for the advise JobandKnock! I have pulled off the pvc trim and it looks like I will need to fully replace the bottom length of wood (see photo) Is there anything other than wood I can replace it with? Like a pvc block or somthing? Just trying to work out a way of preventing this in the...

PVC window in wooden frame (threads merged)

Hi I have an old flat which has a wooden window frame around a pvc window. I need to replace the bottom section of the frame as water has gotten underneath the pvc trim and rotted the wood. See photo. Looks like I will need to replace the whole of the wooden frame on the bottom so I was...

PVC window in wooden frame (threads merged)

Is there a reason I should replace the wood? Is there any reason I shouldn't just cut back the wood and seal the bare wood level with the window? I suppose if the rot continues beneath the window, I would need to to get the window removed and replace all the wood?

PVC window in wooden frame (threads merged)

How would I seal it properly? Also, would there be any need to replace the wood? I was just thinking if I cut all the wood back to the window then there would be a flatter surface to tile. Or would there be a reason to replace the wood I cut out?

PVC window in wooden frame (threads merged)

Hi I have a pvc window in the bathroom which is framed by wood. Unfortunately the wood wasn't tiled over and as such has started to rot due to water from the shower. The wood has pvc trim on top of it so I plan to remove the trim and cut out the rotten wood, replace the wood and attach the...

    Restoring old blanket box

Thats more like it! Lloyd look is described to be "twisted Kraft paper round a metal wire" however, I see no evidence of the metal wire, just the twisted Kraft paper. Don't suppose there is any way to buy this in sheets? I guess it's only made to measure.

The woven strands are not dissimilar to rolled up cardboard. Could it be rattan? Here is a picture of a little bit which I have in rolled:

    Restoring old blanket box

Hey all! Am looking at restoring an old blanket box which has seen better days, most of it needs replacing but I would like to keep as close to the original style as possible. Problem is I have no idea what material the sides are made of and wether you can still get it? It's a flexible woven...

    Hydraulic Hinge

I can see where you are coming from but I can't see how the gas strut could offer extra support used alongside the friction hinges? I was actually thinking about using one of the door closers which magiclintel suggested in the middle of the lid between the 2 friction pivot hinges for extra...

    Hydraulic Hinge

I think I have the answer! Friction hinges! theres these ones which are a nice size but a little pricy: http://www.doorfurnituredirect.co.uk/scpro/bernards/productdetailsmore~productid~2508.htm?gclid=CK75pZ38g74CFWzJtAodi2AA1Q or I could just go for a regular window friction hinge...
