Airlock indeed.... For the benefit of anyone else in the same situation... I used this method and now all is good

Yes it does...... in the loft above rad there are two short 6" vertical sections in the rad feeds (1 on flow and 1 on return) each with a bleed screw but no air in them, so not sure where the air is or how to get it out of the system

Ha Ha...yes indeed... my thoughts entirely! Hence the need to move to something less prehistoric.

Well its almost C plan but has no 2 port valve (any Cyl stat) on the HW side so HW temp can only be controlled by thermostat on boiler

Well more control and better efficiency really. HW has no stat and slow to heat. Heating cannot be on without HW too.

The cold feed and vent (from F&E tank) are on the HW side at the entry and exit from the HW indirect cylinder

Thanks Simon...you were spot on. I assumed that because the pump was humming, it was turning. That assumption was incorrect...I tapped it with a big hammer and the pump sprung to life.

Just moved into a new property and trying to figure out why the radiators are not heating to full potential. Here are a few facts about the system. Old Camay Quartet Oil boiler with flow and return direct to hot water tank (no thermostat) coming from right side of boiler (no pump on this side)...

Yep..its all plastic pipe! So how come plastic is more susceptible to blockage?

I am starting to think its some sort of a blockage myself. I think its a two pipe system as the heating flow from the 3 port valve divides into two before disappearing under the floor boards and there also appears to be 2 rad returns. Hope its not time to lift all the floorboards!

Yes that's a fair point... I knew the bleed had to be opposite the inlet side but maybe its worth turning them around to try. They can be reversed or turned upside down so will try when I get the chance. Thank you..

Bit of an update... Have shut all rads off apart from one of the dodgy ones... it now seems to be getting colder (?) boiler burns on/off/on/ etc Flow pipe from boiler Very hot, return pipe very cool. ...so don't know whats going on now!
