Loft Condensation, or not condensation (Ed.)

Thanks John, that's quite helpful. No photos as nothing to see - the beams that are water stained are reading the same as those that aren't. Main question is me trying to figure out if condensation can cause this level of dampness (sounds like it might), and is this level of dampness likely to...

Loft Condensation, or not condensation (Ed.)

I normally do all my DIY, but this was beyond me, so I had to get a professional in....which is way it's driving me mad not knowing what's wrong! I had a leak from an unknown place, and all the roofers I consulted said: need a new roof! had a 1930s roof with tiles straight on the rafters and...

Cutting off the water from the street

There is something that turns and does nothing that appears to be an ex-stopcock......ours is a weird house where the previous owners made strange DIY decisions, I wouldn't have put it past them to have needed to move the stopcock and then not bothered for some reason. Our street service hatch...

Cutting off the water from the street

Hello all, Successive plumbers have been unable to locate an internal stopcock for my house, so have always turned my water off from the street, so I have followed suit. However, today I have discovered it full of sludge (and ants) and despite my best efforts of remove it all, I can't turn the...

    Advice on toilet fixing

Terryplumb yes, I meant pan, I must be half asleep. I'm changing everything except the pan and the wood of the vanity unit. It's normally where the pipe attaches to the pan where it leaks. (The first guy cut the pipe slightly too short, hence the huge amount of problems we had after that.) So I...

    Advice on toilet fixing

Unfortunately we only have one toilet, so my partner has vetoed my idea of getting a large mallet and smashing it to pieces. So it seems that we will need to try and fix it AGAIN. The current plan is to purchase a complete set of new pipes and cistern so we know everything fits and should be...

Post disaster drying times water in wood

Hi all, I know this is a bit of a 'how long is a bit of string' question, but any uplifting words will be at least morale boosting. The (insert colourful words here) upstairs toilet leaked again. Same problem of the pipe between the cistern and the bowl. The guy who installed the toilet years...

Why is the water not gushing?

FIXED! Thank heavens. The garden tap was attached to a hose with a sprayer, so hadn't been turned off, but looked like it. The hose pipe had split and was cascading water into the garden - because it's been torrential rain here we never noticed the difference! So, I'm slightly embarrassed, but...

Why is the water not gushing?

Just checked - alas no :( How do you trace where your pipes go? One set of pipes we have seem to go nowhere as I think it got modified in the past. Hard to check without ripping the back out of the kitchen cupboards.

Why is the water not gushing?

Re: "might be a leak" - oh ......expletive! I really hope not. I'm not sure where to start looking! Plus the fool who owned this house before us just loved to box over every pipe and decorate it! No water meter thank goodness, house is 1930s build.

Why is the water not gushing?

I've had another look and cold water is also effected, but not as badly. I have a combi boiler, but the shower doesn't go through that so I think it's something before the water gets to either, would you agree? Don't know if it makes much different but I've done a lot of washing over the last...

Why is the water not gushing?

Hi all, I noticed this last night and I'm not sure if it's getting worse. Basically all the hot taps in the house are not giving out water with much force - if you have them on half turn it's almost a trickle, on full blast it's almost normal. I thought it might be my baxi boiler (usually is!)...

    Dodgy building or completely fine?

Thanks everyone. I've got some flashing. I'll try patching it up and see how it goes. I imagine I'll be only delaying the inevitable - an expensive and lengthy job. Is there anywhere other than Checkatrade that I can look to for a good tradesman? There's a bit of a questionmark over the quality...

    Dodgy building or completely fine?

Hi, sorry, not very clear - that's not the drain pipe I'm talking about. The box that pipe is attached too is a wooden box that's been felted over. The sewage pipe is inside the felted over box. This is why I thought it was quite strange. Hopefully this photo will help make more sense, this is...

    Dodgy building or completely fine?

Hi all, I just need a few ideas/advice if you can. Attached is the (seemly) bizarre action a previous builder has done to our home (was like this when we moved in). They have created a box over the sewage pipe and applied the roofing felt over that....you can see what it should look like by...

Epilepsy advice / harnesses / ladders

Hi all, I was just doing a different thread and someone suggested the cheaper option was to just buy a ladder to reach the area I needed to get to. Sound advice, but I have petit mal epilepsy and while this isn't the sort of fits where I thrash around on the floor, I do have absences whereby I...

    Scaffolding conundrum

I'm a bit scared to do that - I have petit mal epilepsy. Whatever I end up doing I'll be wearing a harness just in case. However, it may come to just a very long ladder. Also, I was thinking of replacing the guttering, which is trickier (but possible) on a ladder.

    Scaffolding conundrum

Hi all, I was shocked when I was quoted £240 to clean out two bits of guttering - and that was the cheapest quote. I live in a terraced house in the North East, certainly not a mansion. Maybe prices have gone up suddenly and I'm not aware of it, but I hate getting people in to do a job I could...

Baxi 105he diverter nut - advice needed on fiddling/seriousness

My old nemesis, the Baxi 105he, has struck back. After an epic battle to change a condensate unit filled with dead wasps (I kid you not), whereby I valiantly struggled and won against the poorly installed hose clamp making it almost impossible to remove, I prevailed! Which is why I thought, when...

The little red light of frustration

I hope you can all help. Our shower isolation switch decided to refuse to budge, so after we took if off the wall we discovered it was horribly corroded. We bought a new switch and after much frustration managed to get the bloomin’ thing wired up and back in its cavity. All works well regarding...
