    F&E (header) tank question

it's slightly more than 100mm but not by much. no reason to leave the ballcock tied up then? (see above) i didn't really lose any water during the work and put back in what i got out, so it shouldn't have got diluted. i might stick a bit of inhibitor in anyway, can't do any harm.

    F&E (header) tank question

hi just a thought after my fun this week (and last) trying to fix my heating system... i'm wondering whether to untie the ballcock or leave it tied up? my reasoning being; without leaks surely the system doesn't really lose any volume so doesn't require 'topping up' from the tank? the tank...

    gate valves

i'm not a canal freak lol but i do know a sluice! anyway update, they do open up i was just scared to force them round! so i now have water passing valve to pump, i think the pump's going to work now, just have to cure this pesky leak from pump/valve nut which is what got me into this mess in...

    gate valves

think i understand the gate now, so it's moves up and down the shaft. i was thinking it turned through 90 degrees thereby allowing water to flow either side of it! so if it moves up and down that must mean the square drive but turns a few times round to fully open/close the gate? mine was only...

    gate valves

the reason i didn't want to do that was because i couldn't deal with that amount of water! i didn't want to drain the entire heating system and no drain point between header and pump which is why i took the drip/drip approach from loosening off valve gland. i could only catch drips into a small...

    gate valves

header not empty because i blocked off the feeder outlet. i calculated what i thought would be in the pipework from header outlet to bottom pump valve which was approx. 1.2lt and that's about what i drained out. once it stopped i took the guts out of the valve (leaving valve in place). i just...

    gate valves

it screws all the way in and out (off completely), thread is fine. what i don't get is how does it open/close the gate because surely all you doing to moving the stem in and out of the gate without it actually turning in the valve?? i assumed the gate would be fixed to the end of the stem...

Should the gate screw off the stem completely? No sign of broken parts.

Help - no water getting to water pump??

maybe 2 have crossed over but the other is just about draining....

    Partial draining question

yes tied up ballcock and blocked off outlet pipe, did this to drain feed in side of pump.

    Partial draining question

i'm draining the pipework from above the heating pump (situated half way up hot water cylinder). i wasn't expecting to get much because little of the connected pipework is above this point, likewise the tops of radiators are about the same height. however i've drained a fair bit off already and...

Help - no water getting to water pump??

well i didn't expect that..... after draining (drip by drip) all morning the pipework from header tank to pump valve, and removing said valve it is operating okay?!? don't get it, it definitely wasn't opening in situ as water was otherside of the valve! is it possible for them to fail to open...

Help - no water getting to water pump??

might not be time to throw it just yet then. need to sort these valves first and get water flowing through it!

    gate valves

i think that's what i'll have to do. would it be better to get ball valves? can i get away with just draining the pipework above the valve? i.e. bung the feed from header tank and drain down pipe to airing cupboard?
  17. D

    gate valves

no not drained. gate valves closed for pump head removal. then very slowly opened to see if water was coming through......but it wasn't. so fully opened up and poked wire in but doesn't get past valve so i can only assume they're closed still and therefore buggered!

    gate valves

that's what i'm thinking but don't think i was heavy handed closing/opening them? would you be able to tell when turning it if this is the case? would it turn more freely?

    gate valves

yeh closed them due to slight leak from top nut on pump so put new washer in. then the problems began. initially thought it was an air lock problem, then thought maybe feed from header tank blocked, now looks as if gate valve stuck closed! trying to confirm but other gate valve seems the...
