it screws all the way in and out (off completely), thread is fine. what i don't get is how does it open/close the gate because surely all you doing to moving the stem in and out of the gate without it actually turning in the valve?? i assumed the gate would be fixed to the end of the stem...

Should the gate screw off the stem completely? No sign of broken parts.

yes tied up ballcock and blocked off outlet pipe, did this to drain feed in side of pump.

i'm draining the pipework from above the heating pump (situated half way up hot water cylinder). i wasn't expecting to get much because little of the connected pipework is above this point, likewise the tops of radiators are about the same height. however i've drained a fair bit off already and...

well i didn't expect that..... after draining (drip by drip) all morning the pipework from header tank to pump valve, and removing said valve it is operating okay?!? don't get it, it definitely wasn't opening in situ as water was otherside of the valve! is it possible for them to fail to open...

might not be time to throw it just yet then. need to sort these valves first and get water flowing through it!

i think that's what i'll have to do. would it be better to get ball valves? can i get away with just draining the pipework above the valve? i.e. bung the feed from header tank and drain down pipe to airing cupboard?

no not drained. gate valves closed for pump head removal. then very slowly opened to see if water was coming through......but it wasn't. so fully opened up and poked wire in but doesn't get past valve so i can only assume they're closed still and therefore buggered!

that's what i'm thinking but don't think i was heavy handed closing/opening them? would you be able to tell when turning it if this is the case? would it turn more freely?

yeh closed them due to slight leak from top nut on pump so put new washer in. then the problems began. initially thought it was an air lock problem, then thought maybe feed from header tank blocked, now looks as if gate valve stuck closed! trying to confirm but other gate valve seems the...
