Need advice on a pan connector

Thanks. That's very helpful. I've heard that McAlpine and Multikwik are the two main brands. Is one better than the other?

Need advice on a pan connector

Chris, sorry for the long delay in replying to you. The height difference is around 15 mm and the fitting is at an angle of around 18-20 degrees. I've had another look at the fitting, and its not fixed into the wall and could be removed. I twisted it a bit and pulled it out and I could then see...

Need advice on a pan connector

I'm in the process of refurbishing a cloakroom and replacing the old close coupled toilet. The multikwik pan connection is cemented into the wall, and there is a cast iron soil pipe on the other side of the wall. I want to avoid having to remove this connection if possible. I've attached a photo...

Levelling a timber floor for fitting rigid LVT click flooring

I live in an older property where some of the original timber floorboards are sloping up to 40mm from level. I'm planning to get rigid LVT click flooring fitted and am looking for advice on how to level the floor. I understand that taking up the boards and either packing the joists or bolting...

Need advice on Scottish Government free gas boiler scheme

My thoughts exactly. Take the free boiler and if it lasts for a few years, he will still have saved money on lower bills with the more efficient boiler until it packs up. There is also the chance that it will last for years without any problems.

Need advice on Scottish Government free gas boiler scheme

I did think myself that it was a no brainer, but some older people worry about this type of thing. Thank to everyone for the advice.

Need advice on Scottish Government free gas boiler scheme

Ian, He's not moaning about the choice or warranty, but I don't think it's unreasonable to want to avoid potential problems with a boiler that only has a two year warranty by upgrading to a model with a longer warranty and pay for the upgrade himself.

Need advice on Scottish Government free gas boiler scheme

I'm looking for some advice on the Scottish Government scheme to provide free replacement gas boilers and radiators to people on low incomes. One of my relatives qualifies for this scheme and they have been advised that they can get a replacement boiler, all radiators replaced and underfloor...

Advice needed about fixing studs to a ceramic tiled floor

The house was built around 1905, so the floor is traditional timber floorboards. Tigercubrider, I take it from your reply that there are glues available that could stick wooden studs to ceramic tiles? Are there any that you could recommend? Thanks

Advice needed about fixing studs to a ceramic tiled floor

My hall is tiled with ceramic tiles which extend under the stairs (which are currently opened up). I'm looking at closing off this space and creating some storage cupboards, but I'm not sure what would be the best way to attach the stud work for this to the ceramic floor. I think the best...

Need advice on plasterboarding a lath & plaster wall

I removed a section of the plaster and the laths are overlapped. My view was that this would mean that they would have to come off, but someone who came to give me a quote for the job said they didn't think this was necessary, even after I pointed out that the laths were overlapping. This...

Need advice on plasterboarding a lath & plaster wall

I have some walls with old lath and plaster where large areas of the plaster has detached from the laths. I'm planning to have the old plaster removed and the walls redone with plasterboard. Is it necessary to remove the original laths, or can the plasterboard be attached over these? Thanks.

Moving a double socket to a stud wall

I could be wrong, but I'm assuming that the technical staff at Historic Scotland would have a good idea of the right approach to use in older properties. They have published a number of case studies on projects they have been involved in. Here is a link to one in Glasgow...

Moving a double socket to a stud wall

It's 100mm wood fibre insulation. There is no vapour control layer as my house over 100 years old, and I was advised by Historic Scotland that I should use a breathable insulation material without a vapour control layer.

Moving a double socket to a stud wall

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will use on of the options suggested. I don't have any cable to use for this job. Is it possible to buy a short length of cable anywhere or do I need to get a reel of it?

Moving a double socket to a stud wall

Thanks for the link. The cables come up from the floor below but the socket itself is at the standard height on the wall. The stud framework has already been installed, so I'm looking for an option that wouldn't involve lifting up floorboards to run the cable. I'm a DIY'er and haven't done...

Moving a double socket to a stud wall

I'm having a stud wall built in front of the existing wall in one of my bedrooms to allow me to install internal insulation between the stud work of the new wall. There is a double socket recessed into the existing wall, but the cable is too short to allow me to fit it to the stud framework. I...

Looking for advice on insulating a sloping ceiling

I'm planning to install internal insulation in one of my bedrooms which has a dormer window and sloping ceilings either side of the window. The walls have been stripped internally and I'm just about to order the insulation. Both the walls and ceiling will be getting insulated with flexible wood...
