Main Supply Isolator Switch (REC Switch)

Thanks ericmark and sorry for the delayed response but I did a little digging. Looking at the wording of the regulation associated with Amendment 3: 421.1.201 Within domestic (household) premises, consumer units and similar switchgear assemblies shall comply with BS EN 61439-3 and shall: (i)...

Main Supply Isolator Switch (REC Switch)

Sorry EFLImpudence. I'm not trying to argue, just trying to understand.

Main Supply Isolator Switch (REC Switch)

Thanks 333rocky333. A CU without being connected to the feed (via the meter) wouldn't be any risk surely. Therefore neither would its tails. They must be referring to the ones coming from the main feed.

Main Supply Isolator Switch (REC Switch)

Thanks bernardgreen. How common is electricity theft? Surely any tap offs would be really obvious on unscheduled inspection.

Main Supply Isolator Switch (REC Switch)

Thanks for all the replies. ban-all-sheds: It would be safer for the meter installer. I'm expecting we will be upgrading our meter to a smart meter in the near term and an isolator switch would make that easier. Regardless of that, intrinsically it has to be safer to have the option of...

Main Supply Isolator Switch (REC Switch)

Thank you bernardgreen. I see that the switch itself has security features on the screw holes that presumably allow the sealed twisted wire tamper detectors. I've copied a couple of pictures below. These would stop tampering of the isolator (REC) switch, but not stop someone putting something...

Main Supply Isolator Switch (REC Switch)

Hi there. I've got a simple question about isolator switches like this Wylex 100A one. Their datasheet says: "It’s safer because the supply tails are fixed and finalised in a sealed unit – instead of being left hanging loose ready to connect to the meter." but their diagram shows it between...

    Demolition cost inconsistent

Thanks ^woody^. I know legally they are fine. I had another visit and quote for £8-9k, so either that's the market rate or I came across as a mug to them as well.

    Demolition cost inconsistent

Hi everyone. Sorry if this comes across as quote checking, but I have had some inconsistency from the demolition supplier that makes me worry I am far off market rate. Last year I got a budgetary estimate for demolition of the following: - demo and removal of 4bed bungalow (85sq.m.) asbestos...

    Site electricity during replacement build

Thanks ban-all-sheds, I agree with both of your comments there. As it's a build for us I'd rather put the money into a pot that can be used on finish than into a pot that could have been saved if I was more experienced / canny. So many things run at about £650+VAT that it adds up fast. Doing...

    Site electricity during replacement build

Thanks winston1 and flameport. I did wonder about a generator but was concerned about the theft risk as well as any possible noise etc. I could likely sell it on afterwards though and not cost much overall.

    Site electricity during replacement build

That's really helpful, thank you benardgreen. I was wondering about building a small brick box to house the meter perhaps long term and have submains off that.

    Site electricity during replacement build

Thaks Lectrician "£1000 is not a lot of money when building a house....." No, but it is amazing how many £1000 things there are. If I can save on a few of those it will make the others less painful.

    Site electricity during replacement build

Thanks Screech20. There are two poles on our land, the 11kV transformer pole and a 240V pole as well. The 240V pole is within an area of trees that is to be fenced off as part of the tree protection plan so I guess a TBS at the bottom of that pole could make sense. The meter is a pay as you go...

    Site electricity during replacement build

Thanks bernardgreen. There is a 11kV transformer on a pole on the front left of the plot (looking from road) and then a ~10m wire to a pole also on our land. It then runs into the bungalow which is towards the front of the plot. The workshop is planned for the back left of the plot. Are you...

    Site electricity during replacement build

Thanks ban-all-sheds. Project planning is easy when you have done it before. What I really need is a copy of someone else's to see all the things I didn't realise I needed. The books I have turn out to be for armchair dreamers and only discuss the 'interesting' bits like what type of windows to...
