Raising level of concrete floor by 10mm

Nope...just a regular keen DIYer! Thanks for the reply. I don't think there's any issue with damp, and I have some primer, so could do that option easily I reckon.

Raising level of concrete floor by 10mm

Hi all, In our downstairs toilet (only about 2sqm) I have just ripped up some old laminate flooring and underlay, revealing a decent condition, albeit with some small lumps and bumps, concrete floor. The boss has bought some cushioned sheet vinyl that she would like me to fit. I have about a...

Ikea Whirlpool dishwasher - 6 flashes error, can't find problem

Unfortunately not good news. I had an engineer come to take a look at it. First of all he replaced a couple of wires that ran from underneath the machine to the control panel at the top. Where the door opens and closes eventually they had started to become worn. That seemed to work for a day...

Replacing fencing on different bases - concrete and soil

Hi all, Our garden fencing has taken a bit of a battering lately, so I'm looking to replace it all. Currently it's wooden posts and standard lap panels, but I would like to replace with concrete posts (not as pretty, but easier for future maintenance) and better quality vertical closeboard...

Floating shelf to support a basin

Thanks for all the input on this. I went with a belt and braces approach. I removed the plasterboard, left the biggins, and added 500mm of 18mm ply before refitting the plasterboard. The brackets are now attached to the ply, and it certainly seems able to support a lot more weight now.

    Shower Enclosure Re-Tiling

The question to ask is why the tiles are coming off (again)? If your plasterboard wasn't tanked, it's likely that the water is getting in behind the tiles, which is what's ruining the plasterboard. I'm no expert, but it sounds like you want to be removing the old tiles and plasterboard, and...

Floating shelf to support a basin

Having just re-done the subfloor with 18mm ply + hardiebacker I have some left over, so I'm going to try that. I'll cut out a section of plasterboard, insert a load of noggins, screw ply to the noggins, screw the section of plasterboard back to the ply and studs, and then re-try the brackets...

Floating shelf to support a basin

Thanks. I did think about trying to put something behind the bracket to pack it out a bit, but I was concerned about how that would hold up in the long-term. Once the brackets are in place I'll be tiling around it, so if it slips further there's the potential it could crack/push some tiles off...

Floating shelf to support a basin

Evening all. Not sure if this should be a plumbing/tiling/plastering query, so I've put it in general in the hope someone can help. I'm currently redoing our en-suite, and the missus saw a nice floating shelf with basin that she took a fancy to. The wall that this is to be attached to is stud...

Ikea Whirlpool dishwasher - 6 flashes error, can't find problem

Evening all, I'm looking for a bit of advice with a faulty dishwasher. I have an integrated Ikea Whirlpool DHWB10 which has started displaying the "6 flashes" fault. That is, you try to run a programme, you hear the pump run for 10-15 seconds or so, and then the machine beeps continuously until...

    MR16 with no transformer?

Maybe I've done him a disservice...that was what I understood him to be saying though. It's probably me. When I said MR16, I was referring to the two small prongs. Whereas for GU10 I referred to the larger prongs. I now understand that MR16 covers both GU5.3 and GU10 bases. This is probably...

    MR16 with no transformer?

Hi all, looking for a little advice please. Here's the backstory: I've had an ongoing issue with my kitchen lighting for a couple of months. There are 8 downlighters on a standard (not dimmer) switch, and they are MR16 bulbs. Every so often (a couple of times a week) switching on the lights...

Thermostatic shower with pumped hot and mains cold

Thanks for the clarification, that makes sense. I guess if the mains pressure is 2 bar then the PRV wouldn't be doing anything and we'd still have the unequal pressure. The current pump has died, and although we've been "making do" with the unpumped hot for the past few months, it takes an age...

Thermostatic shower with pumped hot and mains cold

Also, I'm not trying to sound churlish, but what is it about the opening suggestion (fitting a pressure reducing valve) that would be asking for trouble? It's not as simple as ensuring that the incoming feed from hot and cold are both 3 bar?

Thermostatic shower with pumped hot and mains cold

Thanks Terry. So I'd essentially be looking at a standard pump for hot water servicing the bath and taps around the house, and then a twin pump dedicated entirely for the new shower. The existing pump is at the base of the cylinder, would the other need to go here too, or could it be closer to...

Thermostatic shower with pumped hot and mains cold

Looking for some advice please. I'm ripping out our en suite to replace it, and I'm looking to replace the existing thermostatic shower with a new thermostatic shower tower. The cold feed is from the mains, and the hot will powered by a Stuart Turner Monsoon standard 3 bar single pump. I...

Replacement batten lamp holder wiring question

Hadn't thought to check that before. When I pulled the third terminal out it sits in a plastic sheath/holder but makes no contact with anything conductive. Seems as though it is just a parking terminal after all. 20180214_091807 by Tykey posted 14 Feb 2018 at 9:30 AM

Replacement batten lamp holder wiring question

Thanks John. It will be a pretty simple job to replace the current flex with an earthed one (it's not chased into the wall or anything, just a few cable clips), so I will do that to be on the safe side.

Replacement batten lamp holder wiring question

Ahhh...so the third terminal isn't earth. That's good, because as you said, the thought that it was connected up as I originally suspected worried me. I'll pick up a new one. Something like the Crabtree, with 4 terminal blocks, should do the trick then...
