    'Stacking' of sockets - Safe/wise?

    Not every socket, regrettably.

    'Stacking' of sockets - Safe/wise?

Good afternoon, I am considering external lighting, most of which is powered by a standard UK plug. In the past I have connected the plugs into a 'passthrough' RCD, such as this; My question is whether it is safe (or wise) to further 'stack' such plus with other plugs. For example, would it...

Putting up outdoor Christmas decorations - How do you do it?

What was it that let go? A CT1 type product? I won’t be using any self-adhesive pads, they’re just plastic cable tie bases that I’ll stick on with Sticks Like Sh*t or something. But yes I do have isopropanol. I can’t think of much alternative of how to trail the lights over the lead flashing.

Putting up outdoor Christmas decorations - How do you do it?

A slightly ridiculous thread, but I don't think it fits in other sections so this'll have to do. Outdoor Christmas lights. This year we're going for the 'visible from space' motif (albeit in what I hope will be a classy and professional manner - not the often seen 'entire Argos Christmas range...

Drilled into wire, how immediate of a fix is required?

What else are you supposed to do on a Monday afternoon? The chap has been and gone a while ago. There was little-to-no slack in the cable. On inspection he said that the core was undamaged, and I'd just stripped the insulation from the live. What he did was to separate the live, crimp that...

Drilled into wire, how immediate of a fix is required?

There's no docket directly on the other side of the wall, but there is around the corner in the adjacent room. Annoyingly it would have been easier to route the cables to the right in the safe zone. It's almost like they've gone to extra effort to put them bang in the middle. I am likely being...

Drilled into wire, how immediate of a fix is required?

The circuit in question is for sockets. The CU is very poorly labelled (we've been improving that as we go) so I don't know exactly which sockets it powers. In any case, it's the same circuit as my garage sockets, so it knocks out the freezer to have it off - amongst other things. The best...

Drilled into wire, how immediate of a fix is required?

Near J11 of the M40, on the Oxfordshire/Northants border. I do have a good electrician, if I can get him on the phone! I'll do that investigation and return with more info.

Drilled into wire, how immediate of a fix is required?

Thanks for your reply. No I don't. At a guess it could be the downlights for the far end of the kitchen. I could perhaps do some investigation. If I enlarge the hole slightly I can fit my voltage pen in there, check if it's live and do the 'turn off CB's until it stops beeping' method. Is that...

Drilled into wire, how immediate of a fix is required?

Good afternoon, Despite best efforts not to, I've managed to nick a wire during the drilling of a hole through plasterboard. My wire detector didn't pick it up, and (to my knowledge) it's in just about the safest of 'safe zones' possible. The picture isn't very good, but the copper is exposed...

Assorted Christmas / Halloween Light questions

Yes, the RCD tripping would knock out all the sockets (including the freezer), but it's my understanding that a modern freezer left unopened would stay happily stay at a food-safe temperature for at least 24 hours if unpowered, so probably not an issue unless going away for a couple of days.

just unplug them from the indoor socket? Or am I missing something.

Assorted Christmas / Halloween Light questions

Thanks for your input. When I said 'outside the house' I meant in the event that we use the extensions elsewhere/move in the future/get used by family etc. I appreciate that all the sockets on the CU RCD will be protected. It's admittedly unnecessary redundancy and over-caution, but given that...

Assorted Christmas / Halloween Light questions

Thanks for your help. The projectors and speakers will be under a little roofed ‘hut,’ which is fairly open sided. Also as they’re being used outdoors in late October/December at night, ambient temperature will be below 5 degrees, so should hopefully stay cool!

Assorted Christmas / Halloween Light questions

It does, but for the small extra outlay Im happy to rewire each extension with an RCD plug, so if I use them out of the house I don’t have to worry. I understand that using RCD plugs in an RCD protected circuit doesn’t cause any problems.

Assorted Christmas / Halloween Light questions

Good evening, I'm planning on more Halloween and Christmas decorations this year. The plot around the house is big enough that external sockets wouldn't be ideal (and plug RCD's won't fit), so I'm considering using dry boxes and extensions as required. I wonder if anyone would be able to answer...

Outdoor light replacement - Common sense check

Thanks for that. I did wonder if that was the case. Again if anyone knows a supplier of quality lanterns (or could tell me what the difference would be between this one and those) then I'd be grateful.

Outdoor light replacement - Common sense check

No doubt that it's not cheapo tat. What is not cheapo tat? I have looked at various sites and it seems a lot of the more expensive products are rebranded but otherwise identical. I don't mind spending a bit more to get something decent, suggestions are welcome. I've only installed one so far...

Outdoor light replacement - Common sense check

Good afternoon, I'm replacing three existing PIR lanterns with non-PIR lanterns. Removing the old units, it's just 3 core wire through the wall, which joins in a terminal strip in the new units. I haven't installed outdoor lights before, and wonder whether anyone could cast their eye over the...

Advice on loft boarding - load considerations

Good morning. We had a quote to have once side of our loft boarded, so we can use it for (light) storage, i.e Christmas trees, few foldaway chairs for big dinners etc. We've received a reasonable quote from a reputable company which I'm inclined to continue with, but I would like a common...
