    Choosing a correctly sized boiler

Hi folks I realise there are past threads covering this but I'm still confused by the subject. In a nutshell, I moved into a property with a 35KW Glow Worm Combi boiler. My brother in law is able to obtain a very low priced 30KW Worcester 4000 Combi boiler. I'm tempted as my Glow Worm is...

    Installing a shock arrestor

By way of an update, perhaps for anyone searching the internet for solutions. In a small window of time I attempted to fit the part. On realising the olive was going to need more effort to remove than I’d hoped, I refit the cap and turned the water back on and planned to attempt another time...

    Installing a shock arrestor

Yes, I think so, although my plumbing knowledge is pretty much zero. I’ve had a kitchen sink and tap moved 4 feet along the kitchen, a dishwasher fitted, and final fit on an en suite bathroom with shower upstairs.

    Installing a shock arrestor

Aaaand my last question, is thread sealant necessary for this fitting?

    Installing a shock arrestor

Out of interest - is the shock arrestor you recommended more suitable or just a better product than the Pegler version?

    Installing a shock arrestor

Thanks very much for the swift response. And the process of installation, have I got that right?

    Installing a shock arrestor

Hi folks We've an issue following some recent plumbing work (involving two separate plumbers, so no responsibility taken by either!). Essentially, our boiler now kicks in for 10-20 seconds whenever the cold water shuts off (e.g. turning off cold water tap, every time the washing machine draws...

    Replacing Honeywell T40

Hello, realise there are a few posts related to this subject but want to double check my understanding with regards my specific system. I want to replace with a Google thermostat e heat link. The attached photo represents how mine is wired. My interpretation is the yellow wire is being used...

    Radiator requirement for kitchen

Hi folks I'm upgrading the radiator in my kitchen. Due to a lack of wall space I'm looking at a vertical triple column radiator, with a BTU over the required value I've calculated. The size of the kitchen is 4.6m long x 3.3m wide x 2.75m high (42 cubic metres). The house is a 19th century...

Do all vertical radiators require a flow diverter?

Hello, I was about to buy a vertical column radiator (1800x470) but have been warned to check if it has a flow diverter installed, as they otherwise struggle to heat properly (or take too long). The company has confirmed it does not come with said part installed (they don't even sell them) but...

    Chimney repair

Hello I live in a terraced house and our chimney needs to be repaired. The chimney is for our use only and always has been. It sits to the left of the house. One side of the chimney appears to be over the party wall boundary, i.e. on the neighbour’s side. They have their own chimney to the left...

    Tube heater in loft conversion

Thanks all, some really useful advice. I’m not sure what type of insulation has been used but will find out. Trialing for a winter seems very sensible.

    Tube heater in loft conversion

Thanks both. I was referring specifically to a tube heater as I thought that looked like a cost effective way of heating with electricity, rather than costly electric radiators or a fan heater, etc. Although not much use if only for frost protection! We’re awaiting receipt of building regs...

    Tube heater in loft conversion

Hello, we are purchasing a house with a dorma loft conversion. It looks to have been done to a high standard and very well insulated. However, the central heating has not been extended into the converted loft. I suspect because the boiler is located in the basement. We don’t want to use as an...

Stair / step crack underneath window

We've submitted an offer and a survey will be booked if we're successful. A second viewing revealed this beauty. As before - could be one of many things impossible to diagnose from a photo? This is the inside corner of the house (i.e. outer walls on both sides).

Stair / step crack underneath window

Have now noticed what appears to be a large horizontal crack in the mortar just where the house meets the ground. Any view on this?

Stair / step crack underneath window

Hi Woody Thanks. I wouldn't dream of progressing a purchase without a survey - was just wondering if anything could be determined ahead of said survey. If these types of cracks are telltale signs of something serious, for example, I wouldn't even put in an offer. From what you've said...

Stair / step crack underneath window

Hi there I viewed a house yesterday and spotted cracking underneath the window - diagonal stair cracks from each corner of the window running down towards the centre (upside down triangle), illustrated in the attached photos. I'd say they have reasonable width (although I wasn't able to...
