    Above HOB LED lighting

I spotted the Ikea ones in passing last time we were there so will definitely take a closer look at those. The problem with a hood (which we had previously) is that it would have to be placed on the chimney breast (above our heads effectively) and doesn't really illuminate the back of the...

    Above HOB LED lighting

Nope, there's no extractor. There used to be a hood that just circulated the air through a filter but nothing that leads outside. Even that was rarely switched on. When we first moved in over 10 years ago I wondered about it causing damp problems from the condensation but it's quite a big...

    Above HOB LED lighting

Hi I'm looking for some low voltage LED strip lights that can go above our induction hob. The hob is in an old alcove\fireplace so the distance between the top of the hob and the underside of the alcove is only 53cm. Do I need to look for something heat and moisture resistant? Is there some...

    Help with washing machine noise

I've had a look and run a spin with the top off - it doesn't seem to be vibrating unduly. Weights are all solid. I've also compared how loose the drum feels with a neighbours machine and I'm now pretty certain that the drum is in some way detached from its mountings unfortunately. So we're going...

    Help with washing machine noise

If I move the drum back and forth using each paddle in turn a couple feel rough and make a noise and the third seems fine so I get the impression it may well be the drum supports....as suggested It's definitely loose or off centre. Sounds expensive and time consuming to repair. Thanks Mike

    Help with washing machine noise

I did have a brief look but will try again. Not knowing what's normal and what isn't makes it tricky but I'll persevere.

    Help with washing machine noise

It's just over 10 years old. I replaced the motor brushes about 12 months ago. Been ok after that until a few days ago. The problem first occurred when spinning a single large\heavy sofa cover so I imagine it could have been a bit unbalanced when doing that. The spin in the video was when empty...

    Help with washing machine noise

Hi Can anyone suggest a diagnosis for the noise our Bosch Exxcel 1200 express is making? I'm thinking it must be either bearing or shock absorbers but not sure how to tell the difference. Drum seems to be rubbing and then spins off centre at certain speeds and starts knocking against the inside...

    Earthing question

Thank you. So if the RCD is not at fault then I guess I could connect another one - perhaps a plug in one such as the one I use for the mower - and expect it to behave in the same way? If it's an earth leakage fault 'elsewhere' does that mean it could be anywhere within the house? Thanks Mike

    Earthing question

I have done this now. I ran it for 3 days. On day one it tripped several times. Only once on day two and three. It also appears to trip when there is nothing plugged in to it. The RCD is fed by a circuit breaker in the consumer unit which also feeds the house alarm (see image). Do the circuit...

    Earthing question

Thanks everyone for your help. Looks like I'll be calling an electrician for this. :-) Cheers Mike

    Earthing question

Thanks All. @JohnD The wires on the left go to a shed and have been disconnected for many years. The plan is to replace the socket but I'm curious about the trips. I've uploaded a photo of the 'powerbreaker'. I did some tests in the summer when it was dry and had been for several days. The...

    Earthing question

Hi I had another look at my outdoor socket recently (posted about previously but still not replaced!). One of the issues with it is that the indoor 'PowerBreaker' RCD trips often regardless of what's plugged into it (consequently we don't actually use the socket). I noticed that it's earthed...

    Outdoor socket replacement

Yes, it has its own RCD in the house.

    Outdoor socket replacement

Ah, I haven't tried eBay yet. I'll keep looking. The problem with the current one is that the front section is not securely attached to the back section because three of the small brass 'ferrules' have come away. The plastic around them has disintegrated. Thanks

    Outdoor socket replacement

Hi I'm trying to find a direct replacement outdoor socket. Will the current ones that I find online be suitable? I'm mainly concerned that the centres of the knockouts are the same distance apart. 7cm in this case - see photos. The one I have currently is IP56. Most I've found online are...

Thanks everyone, that seems to have done the trick. :)

    rd537i expansion vessel valve(?) leaking

Hi Can anyone tell me what is involved in fixing a leak that appears to be coming from a small screw on a fitting above the expansion vessel? Should I just tighten it or is it symptomatic of something more serious? See attached photo. Thanks Mike
