    Floorboard gaps under carpet query!

Thank you - hadn't thought about that before. Not sure if it would make the floor too high, but it would stop any dust... My main concern is that the 'dust' that will be under the carpet/underlay from the void will get through when it is being vacuumed - essentially I'm worried that once the...

    Floorboard gaps under carpet query!

Thanks for your reply - yes the paper idea does seem to be a good option. I can understand how this would stop dust 'attacking' the underlay and underside of the carpet over time. Without the paper, I'm still not sure how dust could be pulled through a gap in a floorboard then underlay and...

    Floorboard gaps under carpet query!

Not long before we have a carpet fitted (with underlay) in our front bedroom once plastering and decorating completed - normal floorboards with a small void (where you can see some dust, debris and wiring) between this room and the lounge underneath. Does anyone know if you need to 'fill' gaps...

Flue extension pipe next to gutter downpipe?

Ah! Well the work was carried out 3 years ago by a gas safe company and looked at by a different gas safe one so it must be the actual flue and/or end of pipe which is 75mm or greater than the pipework so all good... cheers!

Flue extension pipe next to gutter downpipe?

Thanks for your reply - I checked on 75mm... I thought it would be 75mm from the flue itself and/or the extended flue vent (thanks to the 's-shaped' flue extender) rather than the pipe. I don't think I've seen mention of gutter pipes in flue location. I wonder, did the regs change to this...

Flue extension pipe next to gutter downpipe?

Can the length of a flue extension pipe (plastic) be placed so that it is touching a gutter downpipe (also plastic)? I never really thought about it before - it was installed a few years ago (gas safe). The boiler is a combi-condensing one. I'm guessing that as the extension pipe is plastic...

Blocked off Chimneys on Party Wall (Leave, Vent, or... ?)

Thanks for your reply! So, if I leave 'as is' and get them plastered over, if mold was present or became present would it only be an issue if it came through the plaster itself? Probably a daft question, but I'm concerned that there could be (in the future) damp/mold fumes that we may be...

Blocked off Chimneys on Party Wall (Leave, Vent, or... ?)

Thanks for your reply. My worry is that maybe once plastered the chimney is air tight at the bottom, as at the moment it is boarded and papered so possibly not air tight... so, perhaps that could create more likelihood of mold? Not really sure if opening/sweeping would be a good idea, although...

Blocked off Chimneys on Party Wall (Leave, Vent, or... ?)

Thanks for posting - yes, I'd love to leave them, but the chimney breast does need plastering and I'm worried that there will be an issue with the plaster once on. Hard to be sure. Has anyone else successfully gone with an entirely blocked up chimney (bottom that is)?

    Plastering Rooms - Safety Advice

Hi, We are soon to be having two of our bedrooms re-plastered. I have a young family and don't want to expose them to any 'nasties', i.e. dust, wet plaster fumes as the walls dry out. Is it safe for us all to be in the house while the plastering is taking place? I'm guessing that the best we...

Blocked off Chimneys on Party Wall (Leave, Vent, or... ?)

Thanks for your reply... I was kind of hoping we could get away with avoiding vents as they haven't been vented for decades!

Blocked off Chimneys on Party Wall (Leave, Vent, or... ?)

So, we have 3 chimney breasts that are blocked off and are on the party wall - they are all papered over and I presume plasterboard/wood or similar has been used to block the gap. These are not vented at the bottom, which I thought had to happen. (Please note that I'd prefer not to have a vent...

Thread (String?) on end of radiator pipe.

Thanks, Madrab - I may well trim...if painting, I'll use a tiny amount of paint, which seems to have happened to part of it anyway. Cheers!

Great, so safe to remove or paint. Perfect! Many thanks for the replies guys. Cheers! :)

Thread (String?) on end of radiator pipe.

thanks, Denso13 for letting me know what it is! :) It actually looks like it might be partly painted (or bonded) on to the pipe already, so I guess the simplest thing would be to paint the straggly part round the pipe, assuming it's safe to paint as per Just pumps response above.

Thanks, Just pumps... looks like it's an easy fix! Cheers :)

Hi Terryplumb, Thanks for your reply, here's the pic.

Thread (String?) on end of radiator pipe.

Hello, I wonder if anyone can help with this. I have a radiator pipe that goes into the radiator, but just before that it splits off to a short terminated end that I assume would have been connected elsewhere long ago... this small end of pipe has some straggly 'thread' hanging off it. Perhaps...

Socket Tester - Open Hot (Live) Reading

Many thanks, John - that makes sense! I think the socket is dead, but I'll have an electrician double-check when we next have some work done.

Socket Tester - Open Hot (Live) Reading

Thank you both for your replies, much appreciated - I didn't realise that! Although I take it that 'Open Hot (Live)' doesn't simply = a dead disconnected socket? Wouldn't 'Open Hot (Live)' be dangerous?
