Hanging Blind - Bathroom Window - Hitting metal? How high should the bracket be?

I'm hanging a new blind in the bathroom on the wall above the window. I've tried drilling holes for the brackets, but I'm hitting metal. Here I'm already 3 ½ cm up. How much higher should I go? Thanks

    Thermostatic Radiator Valve Not Working?

We couldn't turn the radiator off in the bedroom, so I bought a new valve (Pegler Bulldog Gen2). I fitted the sensor with 5 in the window and turned it to 0, but this doesn't work either. Am I missing something or do I need to replace the valve body as well? Btw We're in a hard water area.

Vandal Proof Nuts & Bolts For Memorial Bench?

These sound good. But what happens when you need to replace the slats? I guess remove the wood around the bolts and cut with a hacksaw?

Vandal Proof Nuts & Bolts For Memorial Bench?

We met a friend on our dog walk and she showed us how local kids had unbolted a couple of slats from the bench she'd erected in memory of her husband. They'd thrown them into the silt of the river where they can't be retrieved. The slats were simply bolted in place and they must have brought a...

Cheaper House Insurance: ABI Calculates Rebuild More Than House is Worth!?

We're trying to get cheaper house insurance by calculating the cost of rebuilding. I've been outside and measured all the walls and got a reasonable estimate of square metres. But when I fed the figures into the ABI's cost of rebuild calculator, their price was roughly the same as our last...

Guillotine Blades - Sharpen Them Myself - Or Pay?

I paid to have the blades of my guillotine sharpened a few years ago. But it took a few weeks to get them back and I can't afford to be without it for that long. Should I try to sharpen them myself with a stone? I've got a small carborundum stone. They're ok at the moment, but could do with...

Mercury Vapour Ballast - Is it damaged?

Just got my moth trap out after several years of not using it. It has a 125W Mercury Vapour bulb, which require a ballast. But the ballast may have been damaged? Can't remember if I was still using it or not? You can see from the photos that I'd housed it in a Tupperware box - it's used outside...

    Did Mortar Tone Cause Crumbling?

I think I did use building sand - I must have. I probably used a 4:1 cement sand mix.

    Did Mortar Tone Cause Crumbling?

A couple of years ago I re-pointed the patio. But the mortar I used has crumbled as in the photo. I used a mix of cement sand and mortar tone. It was either 30-1 or 40-1 tone to mix. Has the mortar tone caused the mortar to crumble like this? Did I mix it wrong? Maybe I should have used more...

    Replacing Shower Unit? Leaking Unit?

Is it possible for an average DIYer to replace a shower unit? The electrics must be easy, but what about the plumbing? Is the inflow pipe in a standard place? This is the shower that I want to replace, if you turn the tap too much, the pressure causes it starts to leak out the bottom. Maybe...

    Replace Hob Extractor Fan?

Can I simply replace this extractor fan with a new one? Just the fan? Or would I have to replace everything? This one is really noisy and we'd like a quieter one? Thanks

Replacing Shed Roof with Polycarbonate for Increased Light?

I'd like to upgrade my garden workshop (it's a shed) by replacing half or all of the roof with a transparent panel. To allow more natural light in. I've found a company that makes plastic sheds with a translucent roof, they seem a bit too dark and could I simply purchase some polycarbonate...

Waste Pipe Leaking - No Seal?

There isn't a thread. As far as I can tell, the nut is meant to just tighten the joint onto the bare pipe (with a seal I presume?). There isn't a seal either - I can't remember if there was one originally?

Waste Pipe Leaking - No Seal?

What should I do here? The 40mm pipe is a bit short, and I'm not sure what's happened to the seal. That's an attempt with some PTFE to create a seal. The 40mm pipe is cut just long enough by a couple of mm. Thanks

    How to Remove Pencil Marks?

Obviously the best way to remove pencil marks, would be to not make any pencil marks in the first place. What can I use instead? Something to score a line like a bradawl? Or is there a special carpetnters tool for the job?
