What are these details called and what are they made of?

Hello, in the picture below, what is the highlighted detail called? I don't think it's part of a lintel (but I may be wrong). And what material is it made of? Thanks

Covering window arch when installing straight window

Hello, The original windows in the old section of our Victorian house have arched lintels, but the new windows in the recently-built extension have straight windows.... In the old section, a previous owner fitted straight windows and (somehow) covered and rendered the arched portions. The...

Best compound to use when fixing blown plaster

That’s definitely plaster, it was applied after a damp treatment. It’s the salt resistant type. The walls were only stripped up to 1.5m from the floor. Damp company did a terrible job and have refused to answer my calls/emails. thanks for the suggestion, I will look into that kind of filler

Best compound to use when fixing blown plaster

Hello, living room is in a bit of a state, previous owner hadn’t applied plaster properly and large sections of it are blown. Could this newel post be supporting ceiling/floor?

Hello, We are planning on lowering the ground floor level. The stairs will be replaced too, but I'm wondering if the newel post could be supporting the floor above? I have attached some pics. Not looking for definite answers, just want to gauge if I should consult an SE about it. Thanks

Help figure out what is going on under my floor

Foxhole, thanks for the reply. Dampness was only measured around chimney breast and surrounding walls. Readings were high and we were told that this was probably due to failed DPC on walls. However, looking at how the DPM under the floor was not connected to the wall's DPC when it was installed...

Help figure out what is going on under my floor

Hello, I have noticed some funny things going on under the floor of our recently bought house, which was originally built in 1905. Eventually I will rip out the old floor and replace it but I would like to understand (as much as possible) what is going on under it without taking it off. I...

    Dodgy chimney stack support?

Did you have to consult a structural engineer before fitting the gallows brackets? Tbh I wouldn't mind having the whole bloody thing removed, then I could get rid of the chimney breast in the bedroom to free up some space. It's a shared stack but the neighbour says he's not interested in having...

    Dodgy chimney stack support?

We had a homebuyer's survey done, the surveyor used the standard boilerplate "could not access loft because of a number of items stored up there" in his report. Also, reading other people experiences it sounds like a homebuyer survey is practically useless and that there is little if no recourse...

    Dodgy chimney stack support?

Previous owners removed one of the chimney breasts (RHS) and supported the chimney stack with a few timbers. The timbers don't even appear to support the whole depth of the stack... How safe is this and what options do I have in case it needs to be made safer? Thanks

Chimney breast with large hollow plasterboard sections?

New member here so please be gentle :D We moved into our current house last October. The chimney breast in the living room appears to have two large hollow sections that are made of plasterboard. I have highlighted these sections in red. Is this normal? There is another chimney breast in the...
