Could this newel post be supporting ceiling/floor?

Hello,

We are planning on lowering the ground floor level. The stairs will be replaced too, but I'm wondering if the newel post could be supporting the floor above? I have attached some pics. Not looking for definite answers, just want to gauge if I should consult an SE about it. Thanks

With a half landing like that, yes, it could well have a supporting function
