Extending Safety Discharge Pipe for EWI

Hello everyone I’m planning (in my mind for now) an external wall insulation project. Just under my boiler flue I have copper safety discharge pipe (the one that curls back into the wall). It only comes out several centimetres. Clearly this is not going to work with EWI which will project the...

New windows - dual trickle vents?

Thanks @ronniecabers Yes, that value is what he mentioned. I’m guessing that the single trickle vent doesn’t satisfy that therefore a second is required. This is the design which shows the two vents:

New windows - dual trickle vents?

Hello all I am having some new uPVC windows installed. The company has advised that in my bedroom the single window in there will require 2 x trickle vents - one for the top pane and another for the bottom. He mentioned something about the airflow but was very woolly. To me it didn’t make any...

Rectangle window in arched opening question

Hello all I live a typical Victorian house. I am looking to replace some windows. As per the picture the window opening is slightly arched at the top as seen from the outside. Looking from the inside there is no arch. The window (current and new) are rectangular in shape. My question is -...

Should I remove all plaster from chimney?

Thanks Godwasaplasterer. Yes, my thinking was along those lines. I have the opportunity to do it now so why not. I was also thinking in terms of cost. But maybe faffing around with repairing could actually be more hassle than just a nice clean slate to work with.

Should I remove all plaster from chimney?

Hi guys Thanks for the response. I do not intend to use this as a fireplace. I just want to cover it up and leave it be. Add in a vent of course. And it's definitely plaster, not plasterboard. It's quite thick, a brownish colour. Looks like bonding or drywall.

Should I remove all plaster from chimney?

Hi all In the middle of a house renovation. The plaster on the lower half of the chimney is blown. Is it worth just removing back to brick on the whole lot and starting over or could I just go for a repair job and remove only the blown plaster and then re-plaster and then skim the lot? I don’t...

Building New Bathroom - Damp Proofing

Hi Djangobanjo That link was really useful, going through it now. I see what you mean about the batten thing, right now I'm not sure whether would be running pipes or cables. I guess having a batten plus the boards you'd then attach on top is the loss of space. The one thing I though it might...

Building New Bathroom - Damp Proofing

Thank you all. I came across this thread: https://community.screwfix.com/threads/bathroom-insulation.194734/ What is being suggested here sounds logical to my mind...strip the wall back, batten the walls, fix the insulation between (or over the top?, not sure), then backer board on top. What...

Building New Bathroom - Damp Proofing

Thanks Swwils Sorry you’ll need to forgive my ignorance. What kind of thermal renovation do you mean? I’m intrigued and as mentioned originally I’d like to get things right now whilst I can.

Building New Bathroom - Damp Proofing

Thank you Swwils I’ve also read about HardieBacker tile backer boards. You or anyone else here used them? Are these things even necessary? Can you simply not use tabled plasterboard? I ask these questions as if I know what I’m talking about.

Building New Bathroom - Damp Proofing

Hi all We will soon be completing on the purchase of a Victorian-built house. It’s in need of total renovation so we have the opportunity to do things right first time. One area I’ve been thinking about is the bathroom. We will be stripping the wall back down to brick. My question is what...

Chimney Breast Removed but Attic and Roof Brick Work Left

Hi all Just had a Building Survey done on a Victorian house we are in the middle of purchasing. As with most Victorian houses there are chimneys in most rooms. The chimney breast in the kitchen at the back of the house was removed but the brick work in the attic and the external chimney remain...

New Stud Wall in Bathroom + New Window

Hi all Probably going to post a few times here as we're currently thinking of how we want our new house to be renovated. We've hit the bathroom... The new bathroom is a decent size, about 4m in length and 3.75 in width. So a lot of space to fill. What we don't really want is just empty space...

Question on Permitted Development for Side Return Extension

Hello all We are at the beginning of our journey to renovate our Victorian house. We wish to do a side return extension to fill up that space on the side at the back. I have a question regarding permitted development and the 3m rule. My question is: from where does the 3m rule apply? In the...
