    best route for gas pipe

hi all, what's the "best option" (good practice) for rerouting a gas pipe when moving a boiler? the existing pipe goes through the back of the kitchen units (above floor), from under the stairs. as the boiler is set to be moved to the newly built extension, what's the best way to route the...

what's your opinion around plasterboarding an open extension in November?

obviously without a bifold, it can rain inside, cold/damp gets in etc, that's what I mean by weatherproofing. it's basically an external space surrounded by walls and covered by a roof. I take it from your words that as long as I cover the gap with something (e.g. plywood), I can start...

what's your opinion around plasterboarding an open extension in November?

we're at the final stages of our extension shell, so we have the walls and the roof ready. there's a 3.6m opening for a bifold, no bifold yet. what is the general opinion on plastering the internal walls without weatherproofing the extension first? I can imagine any plaster/skim will dry...

    Noisy/shaky boiler after flue removal

I have to admit I don't know, this is what I've been told. I'd not expect the engineer to lie to my face, especially since, like I said, all the gasses, good or bad, were still on the outside of the house, in open space. boiler and gas main were switched off anyway, out of precaution. plastic...

    Noisy/shaky boiler after flue removal

Right, gas engineer just left. The situation was not dangerous, as the boiler was still working properly and the gasses were evacuated externally. It was just a case of the muffler being taken off, not the actual flue. Everything is back to normal, thanks for your advice!

    Noisy/shaky boiler after flue removal

No, I haven’t been using the boiler, I switched it off almost immediately. I also switched off the gas main, just in case. A gas certified engineer will drop by tomorrow morning to have a look. When I told him what happened, he didn’t seem alarmed. For the record, there is still a flue in...

    Noisy/shaky boiler after flue removal

Builder temoved the flue today as they had to build the roof of an extension. Extension is still open (no bifold, joists only), but the flue had to go as it was in the way. Since they removed it, the boiler makes a very loud noise when turned on and it vibrates. A gas engineer is coming...

is this price ok or am I being robbed? (screed)

ok, fine... some builders don't want jobs, checkatrade is a scam site. not helped by the fact that MANY other sites have very similar prices, so I'd like to believe them, but once again: leaving aside games played by people who'd rather not do the job, what is a normal price today for laying a...

is this price ok or am I being robbed? (screed)

No. But before I ask, can someone please give me an indication of what a normal price is for a 100mm screed in the south east? No builder who doesn’t want the job, no builder with unusual expenses, no builder who’s tired of life, no builder who needs to make extra money etc. Just an average...

is this price ok or am I being robbed? (screed)

Inappreciate what you’re saying and thanks for replying, but again, everything else is priced sensibly, so it’s not a case of “I don’t want the job”. All I’m looking to know, from people in the trade, is if this price is a correct one, leaving aside all ifs and buts.

is this price ok or am I being robbed? (screed)

thanks. any suggestions for such sites? also, it's not that I don't "like" the price. if that's what it costs, that's what it costs and I'll happily pay it. but if checkatrade is right and I end up paying three times the usual, then yes, I might frown a bit :).

is this price ok or am I being robbed? (screed)

well, look, I just need to know if this price is justified or not. checkatrade is a reputable site and while those prices are not always 100% accurate, they're not extremely far from reality. when it comes to more specialist work, I can understand price differences in quality. a screed on the...

is this price ok or am I being robbed? (screed)

hi all, just a quick question on screed costs. I agreed a price with a builder for an extension shell (6x3.5m). the price includes the oversite (block/beam), walls, roof and drainage. our agreements was that any additional work I want done on top of that would be paid for separately. examples...

any experience with roofing outlet (bifold)?

this is what I'm trying to find out, are they bad in any way? they all sell visofold, both for £2800 and £6000, trying to understand the difference. the blueprint will be the same, as it's a manufacturer's specification. glass is glass, alu is alu, trying to understand what could do wrong.

any experience with roofing outlet (bifold)?

hi all, we're at the stage where we're looking to place an order for a bifold door. the specs are as follows: 3600x2100mm, 4 panels, alu frame, double glazed, standard color, 4-3-1 config I found a visofold 1000 or a korniche on roofingoutlet.co.uk for a pretty decent price. does anyone have...

block and beam floor - what should the beams be resting on?

our builders started work on the floor, they're looking to build up to DPC today. we're going with a block and beam floor, as recommended. they just laid the beams but they're resting on loose bricks both ends. builder said this is fine and they don't have to be cemented in. for the record...
