Oil Boiler Service - did he do it correctly?

Folks, I have just inherited an old jetstreme oil fired boiler with a new house. I've just had the engineer in to give the boiler a winter service, but I have a few questions with regards to what he did. I didn't watch him undertaking the service, but I did talk to him afterwards. He told...

    Balancing parallel rads

Gentlemen, A simple one I hope :) . I have two radiators in my bedroom that are fed from a single spur from the main boiler flow-return loop. They are plumbed in parallel to one another, either side of a small dividing wall (two rooms knocked into one). I wish to balance the radiators but...

    Faulty Rover Earth?

Gents, I hope you are able to help shed some light on this problem. I am the lucky owner of a Rover 218SLD :? . It has recently developed an electrical problem. I suspect a faulty earth, but have yet to been able to track it down. All circuits function perfectly normally without the...

    Give me confidence

Gents, At the beginning of the year I had all the rads off and renewed all the valves. Each rad got flushed through with a hose except for the big ones which I couldn't lift on my own. The system is quite well sludged (the water was black). I've got the classic symptom of a cycling boiler...

    halogens meet their maker

I have a set of halogen lights in the kitchen which have started playing up. It one of these affairs where the bulbs are suspended from the supply cables which are anchored to the wall one end and to the power transformer on the opposite wall at the other end. Recently the transformer has...

    faulty gauges

You cheeky little scamps! I don't think British Gas would be too impressed if they turned up and I told them to fix my rover fuel gauge. Worth a go may be. They'd probably try to charge me a few hundred quid to flush the radiator! Scoby.... you get house points and a smiley face! I'll...

    faulty gauges

Thanks for all your replies. Not sure I really fancy taking the dash apart and chasing a faulty earth :( . It may well be a garage job this one. Someone has suggested to me that I should get a heat gun on the relay box in case there is water shorting the circuits after all this rainy weather...

    bleeding pump

no problem as such corgiman. Apart from the dreaded black sludge. I had noticed that the boiler gets up to temperature and then cycles like mad. And the boiler casing gets way too hot. Since the energy isn't being carried away in the water I figured that meant a lack of flow and came to the...

    bleeding pump

Hmmm.... I don't actually have air in the pump. I just wanted to give it a go to make sure I know how to do it before draining down. I was expecting to get a bit of water out. Should I be able to completely remove the nut from the pump?

    bleeding pump

I decided to try to bleed my pump last night (Myson SD53). I took the little plastic cap off the central nut and tentatively unscrewed it.... I've never tried bleeding the pump before and I expected great floods of water at any second. I unscrewed the nut until it pulled loose and yet only a...

    radiator valve tail piece

Another quick one.... when fitting the new valves is it ok to use the old compression olive on the supply and outlet pipes. If I wrap a bit of PTFE tape around them will they be ok?

    radiator valve tail piece

Thanks for the replies. I was just wondering about the commonality of the ball joint with a hex hole up the middle configuration. I have since been informed that this is quite common... i don't know if you agree?

    radiator valve tail piece

Just a quick question. Do all manual radiator valves have a common interface between the valve body and the valve tail piece? The reason I ask is that I have bought some new valves for a radiator that i'm taking off the wall and then putting back again. Will I be able to screw the new valves...

    sludge and scale

So is this here chemical descaler and desludger for the central heating as good as they say? Am I right to be concerned at the thought of mobile particulate matter circulating around the heating system? Is there any potential to do more damage than good? I am thinking of giving it a go as I...
