    Friends still around upstairs!

actually, one of the most effective mouse traps I've seen... was a toaster! This was a communal toaster in the student digs I was living in and the mouse was caught in the crumb tray. God knows how long it had been there and god knows how many people enjoyed fried mouse on toast in the...

    Friends still around upstairs!

was actually discussing this in the office today as my colleague has (or should that be 'had' now?) a mouse in his flat. His sister (who's a vet) said that the best thing to use on a trap was a mars bar as it's also quite sticky when you smear it on to the trap.

    drilling through metal lintel

I hate drilling in to lintels. Inevitably, I have to apply a bit more force and the chuck ends up sinking in to the plaster. Yes, in my experience it is possible but proceed with care!

Should I be paying this much for Laminate or is it labour?

You will need to stick on a few quid for underlay of some sort and possibly a damp proof membrame. If you're using quadrants/beading or having the skirting removed then you will also need to factor this in as well. When I had laminate floors put down recently (lounge, dining room, hallway...

    hot water trickling

Hi Blasphemous We've been in the house for about a month now and we're still in the middle of getting our snag list "sorted". It's an open vented system (feed tank?) in the loft and cylinder in the airing cupboard. We didn't do anything to the taps, boiler, cyliner, etc beforehand...

    hot water trickling

Anyone? I've read somewhere that I could try using the washing machine connectors and feed the cold water in to the hot supply from there. The washing machine water supply is a bit more accessible than the bleed valves under the sink but I would like a few pointers about what other steps I...

    hot water trickling

I am a plumbaphobe so forgive me for any potential stupid questions. Woke up this morning to find that the hot water in the kitchen is reduced to a trickle (all other hot taps in the house are fine). The tap in the kitchen is a mono mixer. I've had a look on here and it sounds like the...

    IP addresses

I have a dynamic IP with my ISP and use www.dyndns.com This is basically a service which my router supports - whenever it connectes to the internet it sends my newly allocated IP address to dyndns so that I can track it down with a more memorable static hostname like keifster.is-a-geek.com

    tv aerial loft installation help

We have just had a loft aerial fitted and this feeds three TV points throughout the house. The amp power supply is actually downstairs by the main TV so I don't think you actually need power in your loft.

    creaking floorboards

I have the same problem in my new house. When we picked up the keys there wasn't a single squeak. As soon as the carpets went down and the house started getting warmed up the floors squeaks like a colony of mice are living underneath them. Just have to live with it I guess.

    Trickle chargers

funnily enough, I got one of those solar charges from Maplins for my previous car... which, funnily enough was an mx5! I only ever used the car at weekends and as it was fitted with a car alarm which was drawing quite a lot of dark current it did fail to start on a couple of occassions. If...

Networking Hard Drive on Wireless Network

I think this will depend on the exact model of your internet radio. Some will require you to install additional software on your PC which has the audio stored on it and this will mean that your PC will always need to be switched on, even if the audio files were stored elsewhere.

    laminate flooring loc system

depending on how long your room is, and how many pairs of hands you have to help you, you can get away with laying each row individually and then adding it on to the rows that have already been laid down. If the room is very long then this can be quite difficult. Once you've added each row...

    Loft and nails in timber

Was in the loft at the weekend and noticed that the timber roof frame has nails sticking out where the builders have been a bit "slap dash" during the construction. A quick scan and I counted about 9 nails each sticking out by at least 2". I personally think this is pretty shocking in terms of...

    laminate flooring -staggering the joins

You don't need to (unless the length of your room is an exact multiple of 1380mm!). When you get to the end of your first row, what ever you cut off for the last board will be the start of your second row and that will create the stagger for you. I'm sure it tells you all this if you read up...
