Handy if your a neighbour and want to place a very expensive long distance call, imagine complaining to BT about your bill who send out an engineer to check the line, the look on his face would be priceless :D
 
Did you know that:

A hole was dug in Rome about 10 metres deep and cables were found and it was concluded that the Romans had invented the phone!

its hardly rocket science to tap into a phone line for either spying or illicit use even when there isn't a conviniant socket.

few people seem to realise just how insecure normal analog phone lines are, anyone who can climb up BTs poles can connect whatever they like to them and unless a complaint is made i can't imagine bt noticing.
