Ok - managed to undo it by wrapping elastic bands around it - gave me better grip. The tap is well corroded - I now can't undo the next bit!

Sorted it now thanks - believe it or not my missus had put a box on top of the boiler which was resting against the switch on the wall. Hence no power! Pure coincidence this happened at the same time as me putting a new thermostat in! Cheers for your responses anyway. Kev
