Hot Water to Some Taps but Not to Others

I'm keeping an eye on a mates flat (maintenance wise) whilst he is travelling. The folks renting the flat phoned to say the boiler had locked therefore no heating and no hot water. My mate has a cover policy with BG to cover the boiler and they came and sorted it (I think it was a problem...

    Water and Electricity

Got called yesterday from a customer in a panic yesterday. The bathroom upstairs had sprung a (bad) leak. I'm not a plumber but was called to help in a panic ie switch water off, isolate leak etc meantime. Anyway the water was following its normal course along the downstairs ceiling and...

    Cavity Trays

We are currently building an extension for a client. Its a pitched roof single storey extension meeting a vertical existing wall to the rear of the property. Inside there will be two openings from existing house to extension (ie two spots where dampness would be a problem in the cavity...

    Undersized Breakers

Just out of interest. Whats the consequence of running an appliance that is in theory too big for the breaker protecting the circuit. Reason I ask is that I was asked if I could fix an electric shower that wasn't operating properly. It wouldn't switch on because it had been poorly fitted...

    'Electric' Towel Heater

Does anyone have any experience of Electric Towel Rads compared with 'traditional' towel rads fitted with an element and filled with water. Is one better or more efficient that the other?

    Professional Non Payer

Any help on what action I can take will be much appreciated. Hit a small problem on a job with a customer. It was a stumbling block but definately one that could be overcome. There was no animosity on either side at the time, we both agreed to have a think about a solution. Tried to...

    Plastering Over Cables

Installing cable runs on walls that are to be plastered. Is it against regs or is it just bad practice to leave cables either uncapped or not run in conduit etc. Basically just clipped to the wall(or not even clipped) and then plastered over. Reason I ask is I've spent some time this week...

    Spurs off Ring Finals

If you take a spur off a ring main (from a socket say) then spur off the spur then spur off that spur then connect back into the ring main at a different point from where you left it. Would that be a ring of spurs?

    Some Pictures from Todays Work

Here a couple of pics I took of things I discovered today at work (I know how much you all love pics). Now I am no Electrician, far from it, but its clear to me the serious, and dangerous, faults with this. The back box pictured was buried in 3/4" of plaster with no trace that it existed...

Which is the best way to power an outdoor socket from the following scenario? Nearest power source is a CU in a garage (which is fed by 16mm SWA from the house). In the gararge CU is C16 MCB marked Outside Lights (3 outside lights fed by 10mm SWA) C16 MCB marked garage socket (one...

Two lighting circuits - One Breaker

I was having a look inside the CU at my grans flat (one level). All wiring was redone during extensive renovations in the mid 90's. She has one breaker for all her lights with two wires (red) in it. Got me thinking. Would this be two seperate lighting circuits into the breaker. And if...

    Hidden Ceiling Rose?

Replaced a couple of lights at my folks house. Some nice 1970's brass eyeballs replaced with a couple of GU10 Downlighters. Anyway both lights are switched two way (top and bottom of stairs) but only one T&E wire was present at each light. Am I right in thinking there would be a rose type...

    When The GU10 Lamp Blows

It trips the breaker at the main board. I have a few rooms that have downlighters in them. Whenever one of the lamps go it trips the breaker thus putting all the other lights out until its reset. Is this normal occurrence?
