    problem floor

As an update, filled the void with jablite and meshed the concrete. A lot easier putting in jablite instead of 32 ton of hardcore. Also with the jablite, didn't need cellotex in the floor. So in the end saving on time and materials helped to keep the price down.

    Raising padstones to RSJ advice

I would bed on the padstone and any bricks needed below it, leaving a gap of about 15mm between the padstone and the steel. I would leave this overnight to allow for any shrinkage and then pack under the steel with mortar. Whenever I use mortar for packing I leave it to start drying before...

    The price of old cars

I swapped a paintball gun for a 1949 landrover in the early 90's. The gun cost me about £150. Chassis no. something like R101 00000350 Hand beaten wings short wheelbase, split rims. Sold it to a landie enthusiast for £400 after about 2yrs of owning it. Would love that one back.

    problem floor

Cost and logistics would go against a block and beam. Would solve the problem of damp in timbers but would still need ventilation. The problem is the position of the chapel. It's yards from the towns' major road junction on a very busy narrow road. Materials will be a right headache...

    problem floor

Would still need air flow that's the problem. As for filling the void I could do that with slabs of jablite, very quick to get that in. What I'm looking at is to give them some options, cost being a big factor. They had a quote for 20k off a builder. This was for a concrete slab, hack off...

    problem floor

This is a pretty sturdy stone wall. Been told that a few years ago a plumber cut through it when fitting a toilet. His words were never to ask him back if they needed any more holes cut through. Took a bit of time apparently. My time on this job is for free so the quickest option would be the...

    problem floor

One of the reasons for the cost is a 2- 3ft void that would need to be filled. Getting 40m3 of fill in there would be a nightmare of a job. Really bad access, no parking etc. This is the reason for trying to keep the wooden suspended floor, this chapel doesn't have the funds for a £20k bill...

    problem floor

If there are no suggestions how about any comments on how effective running pipes up through the roof would be. The floor area is around 55m2, 10m x 5.5m. Solid floors on three sides. My thought is to run a pipe, in the void, along the back wall of the room. Then up through the roof at...

    problem floor

Looking for some sensible ideas. The project is a stone built chapel in Wales. The problem is a suspended wooden floor in a room, that has some rot. The current plan is to take out the floor and replace with a concrete slab. There is a quote for over 20k which is way above the funds...

    School appeals

Went through an appeal for my daughter for secondary school. Her brother was already at the school but because of his dyslexia was on a statement so we had no sibling link. We used an expert, £1600, who came up with some good arguments, school funds, class size etc. but to be honest one of...

    Only the highest standards

This job has been done on the cheap. I've been there three days and I'm being messed around about payments. There are two sides to a story, the guy who built the extension is a bricklayer, maybe he's done no roof work but was asked to as it was cheaper than getting in proper roofers. If he was...

This is what £120 a day buys you. The job is a bodge, the whole roof needs to come off but that won't happen due to cost. The roof structure is built off a steel that's in the wrong position. That will be a good one to get over. A good example why of cheap can be more expensive.
